bootable cdrom

I've built my own ptr's and such, but have never really needed to boot from cd/dvd rom. Does one need a "bootable cdrom"?
I thoght all cdrom's were bootable. But I guess they aren't. I had 4 cdroms around and could not get any og them to boot from cdrom. I took win xp to my office, where I have 4 computers, it booted on ONE ONLY.

I think I am missing something. Is there a setup in the bios? I've looked and can't find anything.
Does cdrom have to be slave, master pr something?
Does it have to be a "bootable cdrom"?

You have to make sure the first boot device in your bios is the CDROM.. And your motherboard has to support it, all newer ones do.

2nd also works just fine. But, it does have to be selected in BIOS as a boot device. Most allow 3 of them. I use 1; Floppy; 2. CDROM; 3. HDD 0.

And yes, not all CDROM disks are bootable. You can tell - they are the ones with the .BIN files in the root area.

Here's a tip -if you have your CDROM as a bootable drive, then keep a music CD in it and you will save about 15-20 seconds of delay in the boot cycle while it looks for a bootable CD. It senses the music CD immediately and moves on to the HDD.
