Hey Everyone

Recently I loaded Windows 98SE onto a friends computer and booted it. Other than it taking the normal amount of time for Windows to get its a$$ moving, there seemed to be a 10-15 second delay where the hard drive just simply stopped spinning and nothing was loading up. I know most Windows OSes have a delay somewhere, that you can adjust in some folder or another...Can anyone remind me of which file or folder I have to adjust in the registry to stop this annoying Windows feature....

Pleeeeaaaaaassseee!
Thanks a bunch!

Dont recall any such feature. Other than to enable the bios for fast boot.

If the computer in question has a network card then it might be windows trying to opbtain an IP address automatically, check the TCP/IP settings for the Network card to find out - you can always specify an IP address to speed it up.

Theres some sort of delay built into the hkey\localmachine\shell setting somewhere, i learned it in Networking class, but I can't remember exactly what it is. Has to do with the boot up process...

Bueller? Bueller? Anyone? Anyone?

Mr. Skull is correct.
Take your network settings off of "obtain IP address automatically" and specify an IP address.

A good way to tell if this is the cause of the slow-down is to watch the activity on your NIC LEDs while it appears to hang.

I believe Windows is trying to find an IP address from a DHCP server. You can either, a) give the network card an IP address or b) turn off "find IP address automatically" under your network card's properties.
