I?m in desperate need of some help. I have a problem with my computer that really seems to be stumping me. When I go to start my computer from a cold start I can hear all the normal sounds but I?m getting no bootup from it. The monitor stays black during the whole process. I have tried changing the video card and sticking an old (really old) hard drive in it but nothing. I have noticed this problem for about the past 3 months usually I would start it and hit the reset button a few times and it would come on. Now its taking me 5 ~ 10 minutes to get it started. I've had my computer now for about 2 years and this has never been a problem. Tried cleaning and resetting the components. Replaced the ribbon cable to the hard drive. This is really getting to the point that I don?t want to shut my computer.

Not too sure, but it might be the power supply. Just taking a guess really based off of a problem I had a few years back with an AMD K6 200 system.

It would help a whole lot if you would tell us what motherboard, processor, configuration and operating system you have. With the info provided you could have almost any component bad causing this problem.

As a completely wild shot in the dark, this intermittant problem was seen on some AMD Athlon system using the ALi Magik chipset. It's a timing issue with the processor and components. Upgrading the BIOS can help. Setting the BIOS to slow boot instead of fast boot can also help.

im having the same problem!!! MSI board too!

the D-LEDs say memory problem, but im having someone test the chip ( i dont have any spare ones lyin around) and if its not that its got to be the MB. ive cleared CMOS and replaced the PWS. i get just a black screen and no POST. just stopped one day...

Im running :

850 AMD Anthlon
Asus K7 MB
ATI All-In-Wonder 128 AGP
30 Gig Maxtow HD
Windows 98

I've heard it maybe power supply (mine is 230v). I tried changing the CMOS battery with no luck. Tried removing different components to no avail. Im leaning towards the MB on this one.

I did not mention that I wasnt getting any beeps from my computer when I try to start it.

Do you think this could be a power supply problem that would show up after 2 years of reliable service? Every thing seems the same no noticable changes with the power supply. Its still the same basic set up that it was one I first bought it. The olny thing Ive added has been memory. If it is a power supply what would you recommend?

BTW This post also ties into my post "Just how screwed am I".

foxtrot,

i took my comp to a technician who would be able to swap out parts (memory, cpu) that i dont have to test the board and he said my components worked. so i ordered a new mobo and that should fix it for me. i also went ahead and bouight a new pws cuz im pretty sure that DEER pws !@#@'ed up my computer. in your case, since it apparently runs, it could be a PWS issue as well.

it may be heat, but i don't think so cuz it seems like it has trouble powering up from cold and not warm boots. i think some bios wont boot the cpu if it reaches a certain temp to keep it from damaging itself, but i could be wrong.

i just picked up an Enermax 350 watt from newegg. many people say to stay away from Deer and its related products under diff name (L&C, and foxtran or something like that)

just make sure it has enuff connectors that you think you will need and i am going to stay with 2 fan models b/c i want to add another exhaust fan to my system and airflow is important to keeping the case cooler. i think heat messed up my pws which may have done in my board. im not sure until i get my new board here and i can do some experimenting.
