Boot to scsi cdrom? code 4

I'm not sure exactly what I need to do in order to boot to my scsi cdrom. I always get this error, regardless of which bootable cd I use:

cdboot: cannot boot from cd - code 4

I'm using an Adaptec 2940uw, the cdrom is ID 1 and is set to terminate. I've set bios to boot from cdrom first and I've also tried setting it to boot to scsi first. I've gone into the scsi setup and set it to boot to id 1, but it still does no good... what am I missing?

Boot to CDROM in motherboard bios will enable IDE CDROM booting, set it to boot to SCSI. You must have the controller bios enabled in the SCSI controller and the controller must support booting to CDROM. Some CDROMS wont boot I have found over time. When your bios screen comes up for the controller does it say there is a bootable CD in the drive?

Yes, it does say there is a bootable cd in the drive. I booted from this drive before (plextor 40x), but that was years ago. I don't recall anything in the setup that enabled/disabled the bios. I did, however, see several settings that said "these settings below will have no effect if bios is not enabled."

Some of the controllers say something on the order of "enable INT13 support" to enable bios. If it says there is a bootable cd in there it should prompt after the detection phase saying something like "press any key to boot to CD....." and you have like 5 seconds to respond or it will bypass booting to CDROM.

Thanks for your replies, but I don't think I'm making any progress. INT13 support is enabled, and boot to cdrom is also enabled. I'm familiar with the prompt I should have for a computer attempting to boot to the cd, but instead I get the error: cdboot: cannot boot from cd - code 4. I've googled this message and searched Adaptec's site without any success.

I've now tried different CDs. My 2k cd gives me the code 4 error, but my memtest86 and 98se bootable cds tell me NTLDR is missing, as if it is looking on my scsi hd for it... or something.

I've also tried resetting the card to defaults, disabling SCAM support and enabling multiple lun support to no avail. I'm at a loss as to what to try next. Is it possible I'm dealing with faulty hardware?

Is this an authentic Win2K cd? Thats about all I can think of at this point is the CD is corrupt or dirty or scratched badly.

It's an authentic copy... 🙂 It's an educational copy I was allowed to download from VT a couple years ago. It boots fine on my main rig, as do the other bootable cds I've tried.

One last thought is termination. I have had drives work perfect until you started installing or loading up 32bit data, that werent properly terminated, and they fell on their face.

I'll double check my termination. Would this even be 32-bit data though since it's not even able to boot?

Hell Im not sure, Im not that smart.. LOL

Why dont you make a set of boot floppies and try it that way. If it wont read after using boot floppies you definitely have a problem with the drive, install disk or the controller setup.

I checked my termination today. Believe it or not, they're all jumpered and terminated properly. 🙂🙁

Any other scsi gurus out there? I know you're not the only one. 😉
