Problem!

I upgraded my system today. When I tried to boot it everything comes on fine for a second, then everything immediately shuts off. So I can't boot the motherboard. The MB power light remains on, but that is the only normal thing happening.

Here is what I have:

P4P800 (retail)
P4 2.4c
512 MB PC2100 Nanya
Gainward Gf2 Ti200
IBM HDD
Maxtor HDD
Pioneer DVDR burner
Pioneer DVD player
Adaptec SCSI2 card w/ Plextor 12x writer
400 watt ps

That is my complete list of what is on the system.

Any suggestions on what is wrong?

Any help would be appreciated!

Here are some first guesses:

  • Are you using the Cheetah avatar? It works best with AMD-based systems. Ok, just kidding ;)
  • Do you have the 4-pin secondary power connector plugged into the motherboard? If not, plug it in.
  • Are you certain that your video card is fully bottomed-out in the AGP slot, and your RAM is fully seated in the DIMM slots?
  • Why are you using PC2100 when you need dual-channel PC3200 for that setup to work well? ;)
  • What PCI slot is the SCSI card in? (IRQ issues)
  • What brand of power supply is this? (Quality matters)
That's a start.

1. I had an AMD system and decided to get a P4.
2. The Video card and DIMMs are all the way down.
3. The PC3500 DIMMs are not arriving until Monday. I just thought I would get my system up and running until they get here.
4. I completly took out my SCSI card and it produced the same reslults.
5. A1 is the brand of the power supply.

The A1 power supplies are not very good. They even took down their crummy website. While you're waiting, I suggest getting a nice Antec TruePower 330 or higher, or an Enermax 350W (365-series) or higher, or Sparkle Power 350W or higher... no way I'd trust a nice system like yours to an A1 :p

I tried to download the motherboard manual so I could see whether this might just be an issue with the PC2100 memory versus the P4C processor, but the file Asus has is corrupt, so I can't look at the manual. Anyway, I hope it all works out for you :)

Thanks for your help mechBgon.

I found out what the isse was. I didn't know there was a new 12v, 4-pin power connector that new power supplies and motherboards have. My older A1 power supply doesn't have that connection. I replaced it with the power supply that came with my new case and discovered that connector. Then I looked on the MB and somehow it fit in there. I now have my system booted to the BIOS. Everything is fine, so far.
