boot from ramdrive

okey
here is the problem
i try to boot windows xp from a ramdrive.
i make the image of the windows .img at size 480mbytes ntfs file system compress to save some space
i boot my system i choose ramdrive from the boot sequence
image is loaded in the ramdrive
and then i get hal.dll missing or corrupt
what i am doing wrong!??!?!?

In order to create a Ram Drive, the PC must be booted. What are you using for that step? Windows does that with its install bootable optical media.
 
why are you compressing it?
500mb file limit for the image if bigger then windows can not load the image
so far my installation with drivers and firefox is 749 mbyte on disk
420 mbyte in the image
the image is 480mbyte the files leave 60mbyte free space to maneuver

my hard drive for the tests right now
letter all will be in a usb
 
I would definitely make this post in the 911cd link you posted as well. They're going to have a lot more people into this sort of thing then the general anandtech population.
 
Windows wasn't designed to run from a RAM disk, you might be able to get a WinPE instance to work but not full Windows.
 
Installation Media (like DVD) can boot in order to install.

After it the installed functional code does not have code to rad from USB or RAM Disk.

Years some people try to add code to Win XP to force to read read USB at Boot. I don't think that they succeeded and the whole thing was abandoned years ago.

The current release Win 8 Enterprise Edition is the only functional client Windows that can be installed to boot from USB.
