No, there were two clear generation changes in 1997 and again in 2005. The debate is whether 1997 is the second or third.

"Mark IV" is the generation of the Jetta/Golf that the particular board was talking about. If you had read the thread (before it was shut down...) you would've seen that instead of coming in here and making a bunch of asinine comments about the nit picky details that were clearly visible if you took half a second to look. Stay in P&N, they love that kind of stuff.

Did your boyfriend piss in your Captain Crunch this morning? I skimmed through the posts and don't recall seeing anything about Mark IV and even if I did it wouldn't mean anything to me, just as E46 doesn't mean anything to most people...even BMW owners themselves.

I think I brought up some valid points. Don't like them/agree with them? Too bad.

VR6 is an engine type. It's VW's narrow angle V6. But it is also a trim level.

Jettas and GTIs used to have VR6 engines

1999-2002(i think) Jetta and GTI VR6s used 12v VR6 engines producing 174 bhp and 181 lb/ft of torque. In 2003 VW switched to the 24v VR6 engine which produced 200 bhp and 190 lb/ft (i think) of torque. both were 2.8L engines.

VW also concurrently made 1.8L Turbo GTIs and Jettas making 150 bhp in the '99-02 period and 180 bhp in the '03-05 period.

VW also produced a Golf R32 in 2004 and currently the 2nd generation R32, dubbed the MkV (that mark 5 as in 5th generation) R32 with the 3.2L 24v VR6 engine producing 250 bhp and 236 lb/ft torque.

AFAIK the VR6 engine was never used in a newer Passat (maybe it was back in the early 90's). The Passat's engine bay was big enough that they could fit a regular V6 in there.

While I can't comment on the VR6 I can say with absolute certainty that the 2002 Jetta 1.8T made 180hp.

So basically saying VR6 doesn't even really clear up which engine is in the car or even which car it's in. Thanks for clearing that up I guess...I'm more confused now. Personally, I think you just confirmed my point. :laugh:

Yeah, the change happened in 2002 for at least the 1.8T. My wife had a 2002 Jetta 1.8T and now has a 2006 Jetta 2.0T.

no the whole point of the thread is that VR6 engines are naturally aspirated. It is making fun of the person asking why his boost gauge doesnt work on his NA VR6 car. you dont really have to know which VR6 engine he has...just that VR6 doesnt have turbos
