not sure if this belongs here, but its news and definetly good news :D

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/3063433.stm

A big expansion in the amount of electricity generated from offshore wind power has been announced by the UK Government.
Licences are being issued for thousands of turbines to be built off the British coast to generate as much energy as around six nuclear power stations.

It will also make a major contribution to the government's targets for renewable energy and create up to 20,000 jobs.

It is the biggest single step taken to increase the amount of electricity produced without polluting the atmosphere, BBC environment correspondent Tim Hirsch said.

Yep - seems the Brits are on the ball with this. Seems to me that just a week or so ago there was a big hubub over on the East coast about wind power. Hmmm....I can't seem to put my finger on who was whining about it though;) I know who but I know you all will want proof, so maybe I'll go dig up the stories.

how about a boost for onshore windpower?
i live in an extremely windy environment, the panhandle of OK, its all either flat plains or in my area, sorta rolling/flat plains.
there has been some development, but nothing like it should be, it should be nothing but wind turbines as far as the eye can see out here.
same with western OK, western KS, eastern CO, every plains state for that matter.

Iowa just announced the biggest wind farm in America(or was it world) is going to be built in northwestern Iowa (where there are already many wind farms).

Oh and I found the East coast hubub. To hug a tree or to not hug a tree - this is the question.:p I'm a big supporter of wind farms so don't get your panties in a bunch you tree huggers;)

I agree. Texas has a couple of wind farms.

Here are details concerning one run by TXU

Many people see them as eyesores while others worry about birds. Nevertheless, we, as a nation, should put more emphasis on non-fossil fuel in addressing energy requirements.

Another article here as well Cad. Some of the liberal Cape Coders who often talk about how we should be exploring alternative energy but don't want it in there back yard. They are waiting for Teddy Kennedy to come in and put a stop to it...Don't want to ruin those views from the compound.

i would much rather see 10,000 turbines than one smokestack from a coal fired plant.
yeah CKG ive read Iowa was taking a big lead in windfarms, which is great. OK's potential is even greater(more wind and more land) OK #8 IA #10.
we have(building) 2 in OK, i think a problem with where I live is the lack of transmission lines, i have talked to the head of the oklahoma wind power intitiative OWPI and those lines are very cost prohibitive to put in, 1 mil a mile i think it what he told me.
but places closer to the center of population its more feasible(more places to tie in), but still those are just short term costs, the long term is what we need to be concerned with. so the utility companies need to lay the damn lines and quit bitchin, i would be willing to pay a higher rate on my energy bill if its a clean source of energy.
these also can be a real boon to rural areas too, the landholder gets something like 1000 bucks for every turbine on the land, i guarantee you make more with 20 turbines on your land (for nothing) you get from raising corn or cattle(exceptionally hard work).

Wind farms... good idea... we need some innovativeness out here in California... but, first I want to go see what the haps is in England...

England (or someone over that way) has had these for years(I believe it was 1995). I can't remember where it was in was exactly but offshore Turbines has been successful from all accounts I've read.

Now all this doesn't come without gov't waste though ;) I do believe that there was a gov't grant of a few hundred thousand dollars to have some people count dead birds in the cornfields of northern Iowa, presumably to see if the windmills were killing birds - only problem is that nobody counted dead birds in a cornfield before the wind mills so there is no "base" data so no conclusion could be reached either way :p

Am I about the only one getting sick of your remarks (whatever they are) consistently followed by winking icons? If you have an opinion on something, make it that way, stepping over the line and then trying to step back by acting as if you were kidding is spineless.

Stupid idiot, you f!cking suck. ;)

I'm told we have windmills and solar reflectors on the road from LA toward Vegas.. somewhere.. and have had for some time.. So since I've not heard of it must mean that no dead birds... about. Actually, on that road folks drive about 350 mph or so and if anything is gonna kill what ever birds are in the desert it would be the cars.. and the pollution of their exhaust...

(at least I've stopped polluting with cigarettes... day two of week three..):)

I knew I wasn't just California dreaming.

In the year 2000, wind energy in California produced 3,604 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, about 1.27 percent of the state's total electricity. That's more than enough to light a city the size of San Francisco.
More than 13,000 of California's wind turbines, or 95 percent of all of California's wind generating capacity and output, are located in three primary regions: Altamont Pass (east of San Francisco -- a portion of which is shown on the right in this photo from NREL), Tehachapi (south east of Bakersfield) and San Gorgonio (near Palm Springs, east of Los Angeles). In 1995, these areas produced 30 percent of the entire world's wind-generated electricity.

A lot of people are talking about California but CA is actually wind resource poor (at least on land). Nonetheless, CA has the most deployed wind power. Unfortunately a lot of the states with lots of wind resources don't have a lot of people. Oh well.

Wind resource map on page 5
deployed power

But the biggest consumers of electrical power are chemical companies. Maybe it will be cost effective for them to relocate to where there are cheap wind resources some day.

Do you treat other posters who use indirect ways of posting this way? Moonbeam - does konichiwa get his panties in a bunch when you post things?;)

Get over it konichiwa - It was meant as a joke, quit taking yourself so seriously -this is only an internet forum, can't we have a little fun sometimes? Oh, and weren't you part of that whole etech bashing a while back for not realizing something was a joke?
I use the wink or other icons to add intent and feeling to text(exactly what they were intended to do), so if you don't like them then I suggest you march your panty filled hiney over to Forum Issues and suggest that the smilies be removed.
