I can't actually complain about my job. It's relatively easy, pays pretty well (the fact that I'm broke is due to my lack of any sense with money), and I get to work alone on a shift that I love, and get paid extra for doing it.

But some nights there's SO little to do, it makes me almost wish something would happen. Most of my night is spent doing occasional minor things that take about 5 seconds at a time. I fear one of two things: they'll "find something" for me to do, which will drive me nuts because it's pointless or useful but mind numbing, or they'll decide that they don't need me on this shift.

Somebody harass me on IM. :) Nobody on Craig'sList thinks I'm worth talking to. Can't blame them.

I thought that was obvious. I sit at a desk and try to stay awake. :)

We're a Managed Services Provider. The majority of my work is watching the remote monitoring system; we monitor other companies networks and servers, troubleshoot problems, notify them, depends on what exactly their needs are. Basically we take on as many of their "helpdesk" functions and monitoring as they want. Some just don't want to have to have somebody always watching the network, so we just call them if something goes down. Others don't want to have to have their technical people spending time on simple fixes that we can do remotely. Some don't want to have technical people at all and let us do everything, only needing to call them when a physical action is needed. We also host some servers for particular customer applications, and provide support for the application to end users and the client's employees.

It's a good business. Some parts of the year are just slower than others in terms of activity.

And actually, yes, we are hiring. :) I believe we still need a replacement for the guy in our group that's moving to a level 2 support position. Need to basically be able to do a help desk job, phone calls, email, etc., and also do in depth support, what our management calls "level 1.5", since none of us is certified beyond minimums in most areas, but the system is set up to allow us to do a lot of stuff by following instructions. Skills in Win2k to 2003, Cisco networking, those are required. They say they require a Bachelor's in something, but I think maybe a third of us have that.

My biggest requirement, which my coworkers will agree on, is that you have to be able to fricking use a computer. We hired one guy and had to get rid of him because he was an older guy, typed slow, read slow, did everything slow. Couldn't remember where icons or shortcuts were on his desktop, couldn't remember instructions from one use to the next.

You also have to actually be able to learn, follow instructions, not keep doing the same mistakes over and over after we've told you the right way to do it. Our most recent hires had problems with that, and are only barely acceptable now. But we can't afford to get rid of them because we're at minimum staff levels already.

Actually I'm using Craig'sList for three reasons: to get laid (SIX FREAKING YEARS), find some friends I can actually meet in real life, and maybe find somebody for a long term relationship. Getting laid of course is of less importance if I find somebody I'd be interested in a LTR with. There are a few prospects but no replies yet. I'm not exactly a great catch. More of the mercury contaminated variety. A lot that I'd like to consider prospects, but don't meet their requirements (damn tall girls wanting taller guys).

Of course, the men for men section on CL is nothing but solicitations for anonymous sex.

And yes I realize that was either TMI, or fodder for laughter. :) I talk about anything, I'm not ashamed.

Bedford MA. In a dungeon. :)

Oh, but it wouldn't be as much of a dream job. The opening is on the weekday daytime shift. It's a lot more busy, and there are people in the same room so you can't slack off as much, although they pretty much understand there are lots of times when you just don't have any work to do on any tickets. But it is a lot more stressful than the weekend shifts, I hated it for the time that I worked it, never want to go back. But I'm a paranoid guy, I don't like people sitting behind me.

Hey I laughed...I ventured there once...not a great place to meet people.
