Booo, Cingular family plans suck....

On a cingular family plan, all the phones have to have the same area code.... That sucks, every other company i've had a cell through let us use multiple area codes on our cell phones...

how's Verizon by comparison? I'm deeply interested here, b/c I'm going to finally kill my Sprint plan and thought Cingular might be good for the rollover, but diff. area codes in the family plan is a must for me.

Any thoughts?

I just called, they said they can do different area codes in the same small region (like the two area codes next to you), but no farther....

Thats such bullcrap.....
 
By different area codes, do you mean they won't allow area codes that overlay the same geographic region, or they won't allow you to have both a CA and a NJ area code on the same family plan?

B/C every company ought to be able to handle the former, but I'm suprised that any company offers the latter.

it is... I'm from NY and my wife is from VA, and it makes no sense that my family would have to dial long distance to reach either of us just b/c we're in another state. the cell phones are built just for that long distance convenience...

I'd like to speak to the manager!!!

They probably could support this, but if they didn't, they wouldn't be able to upsell you on a more expensive regional/nationwide calling plan. :cha-ching;
 
Here in California, you can get any number in California, Nevada, and Washington.

As far as the family plans go, no other carrier beats Cingular right now...

Cingular:
2 lines $70, 3 lines $80, 4 lines $90
850 Rollover minutes, Unlimited Mobile, Unlimited Nights and weekends (Nationwide roaming and LD included for free)

Verizon:
2 lines $80, 3 lines $100, 4 lines $120
900 Minutes, "Unlimited IN Calling, Unlimited Night &amp; Weekend Home Airtime Minutes" Roaming charges apply

At&amp;t -> part of Cingular
Sprint -> Terrible
Nextel -> More expensive than Verizon
T-Mobile -> Who?

2 lines $50
400 minutes, unlimited tmo to tmo, unlimited night and weekends.
free to check voice message and first 30 mins will be free if you reply a call through voice mail system.

I and my sister usually have 100 spare minutes left at the end of the billing cycle.
 
T-Mobile is the same way, though the area code isn't what matters. The numbers have to come from the same general area. I can't mix say a Portland area code &amp; a Pittsburgh area code, but different Portland area codes are fine (503 and 971).

Two questions.

1. Were you an AT&amp;T customer before the merger? Apparenly AT&amp;T allowed it, but AT&amp;T/Cingular does not.

As a general rule of thumb, if you don't get the answer you want from one person, call and talk to another. Most Cingular employees don't know which direction is up right now, so you may have just talked to a confused rep. Cingular's policy is to allow you to take a number from any area code listed on their "region" plans.

I've called a few times and even stopped in the stores...

Normally, what you said is true, but every employee that i talked to said the same thing, its only within small regions, not complete regions. For example, Cingular's regional plan for Florida covers the whole state. However, since me and my dad have area codes in Ft. Lauderdale (on the east coast), we cannot add another phone with a Sarasota area code (west coast of FL, less than 200 miles away)
