On my PS3, the movie does not take up the whole screen. There is a black border all the way around the screen (16:9 samsung LCD). It seems that I ought to be able to increase the size somehow to fill up most of the screen.

You have a really old non-Anamorphic version of the DVD. Meaning, when DVDs were first released, widescreen TVs were not the norm so some DVDs were not designed to be played on them.

Unfortunately there's no real fix other than using the zoom function on your TV. Or getting a better DVD version that is anamorphic.

This mocie was way overhyped and entirely pointless. It wasn't quite B quality, but close. As a guy who loves violent movies I still found myself stopping this movie before its end; I simply got bored and/or didn't give a crap about it anymore. Two thumbs down.

See, there's the thing. Troy Duffy didn't mean it as campy or a tongue-in-cheek parody of truly awful, uber-violent schlock. That was his attempt to make an important movie with substance and a vital message. He failed miserably. Even as pure camp it missed the mark by a mile. But to shoot for the top and still not even rise to the level of parody is a crime. Boondocks Saints was pure dog shit and anyone that enjoyed it probably owns Ecks vs Sever on BluRay.

i remember buying that dvd and thinking how original i was and feeling good about myself. then i went to college and just about every motherfucker in my dorm had that movie.

I enjoyed it. It wasn't great, but good enough for a popcorn movie.

It's okay for different people to like different things.

I don't know what Ecks vs Sever is... and I don't own a BRD player.

As for the movie, I really considered it a not-to-serious shoot-em-up. For this kind of film, I generally don't care too much what the director was going for. If you want this movie to be a dramatic and thought provoking examination of vigilantism in contemporary society, it's horrible. If you want to see people throwing toilets off of buildings, it's pretty good.

you have your PS3 set to triple scale, or whatever it's called, your SD material.

Thing is, it's a really good upscaler, but I too hate the framing. So I just set it to fullscreen, or whatever the setting is that fills up the sides. (maintains letterboxing for OAR).

Thanks for the reply. I changed "Upscale" on the PS3 to all the different settings (Off, Double Scale, Normal, and Full). None of them really work right. "Full" just stretches the picture all the way across the screen, but doesn't really increase the vertical height, which makes everyone look fat. Is that the setting you use?

EDIT: I ended up messing with my TV controls and managed to get the picture to fill most of the screen. Thanks anyway.

ah, yeah. sounds like what Slick said. I do believe mine is set to Full, and I've never noticed it stretching SD material. It maintains OAR pretty well. Though, I'm not sure I've played a non-anamorphic DVD.
But Normal Upscale should work, too, I believe. It was Double Scale that I hated.

all of the above movies EXCEPT boondock saints are good, entertaining movies. snatch and clerks exceptionally so
