I don't believe either should in the HOF.

Boomer was the better QB but Phil won a Superbowl.

actually, i posted this because most people in the NYC area think Simms is a god and boomer is probably underrated in this area.

boomer, on the right team, would probably have been a HOFer. he got screwed with the bengals for so many years, altho he did take them to a super bowl.

I don't really think either are HOF worthy, but if I HAD to pick one to go, it would be Boomer.

I think the proper cliche is "it's the Hall of Fame, not the Hall of Very Good."

so you think both are very good?

phil in my opinion very good.

boomer was borderline great. i listen to WFAN most mornings and boomer has taken over Imus's spot. as i was listening to him this morning it got me thinking about his career.

he really was a very very good qb, again, as i posted earlier, borderline great.

so, i was just curious as to how others felt, how close was he to great. if he had won that one super bowl he was in against joe montana, would that have put him over the top?

Simms suffers from being on a team that won mostly on defense and a running game.

I agree Boomer's probably close... he had an MVP year IIRC, but not that many great years. Plus you have to consider the competition they'll face in getting in. Marshall Faulk, Curtis Martin and Jerome Bettis will be up soon and they'll all probably get in on the first ballot. Lots of others coming up too... does Terrel Davis get in, for instance?

agreed, altho i'd probably take boomer over bettis for a team.

Among the league's all-time top 50
Pass attempts: 11
Completions: 12
Passing yards: 13
Passing TDs: 14

boomer is top 15 all time, in the above categories. that is pretty close to being an all time great.

There's some truth to that. :)

Boomer may have been a marginally better player, but he wasn't the team leader that Phil was. The Giants lived and died with Simms.

seriously tho, NY fans think that Simms and LT are gods, they worship those two players. ok, mb LT was god, but i'm still not convinced that he was as good as NY fans think he was.

I'd say they lived and died depending on how coked up LT was. ;)

Or how well they were running the ball with Morris or Anderson.

Being a Giant fan through the Simms years, I would say it is a toss up. Boomer was more talented, but also made far more mistakes. I also believe Simms was a better big game qb as well. Neither I believe is HOF though.

I don't like either one of them but Simms won Superbowl.....-----> Winner.

Marino is my man but he never won a SB.

I'm a longtime NY Giants fan and I can't stand Phil Simms. He may have been a leader, but Hostetler won the 1990 SuperBowl for them. Additionally, he beat out Simms for the starting QB role the following season. Phil Simms is not bad as a broadcaster, but I would turn off games he was broadcasting when his son was playing for Tampa Bay. His commentary drove me nuts.

So did Jeff Hostetler (sp). So did Doug Williams. So did lots of other QB's who aren't in the Hall.

Phil wasn't good enough to be in the Hall. Boomer was a better QB, but Phil played on better teams, with a better coach.

Winning one game doesn't make a career as far as Hall-worthiness goes, IMO. It's just one game, and it's a team sport.

If you're on a half-ass team and you take that team on your shoulders and win the Superbowl and throw up killer stats....that's a case there.

But if you're just a good-to-fair QB who plays on awesome teams with a HOF coach and you just pilot the ship....hey, enjoy your rings, but you don't get in the Hall.

Which is irrelevant, as football is a team sport. Dan the Man didn't play defense. Nor could he play receiver or running back, offensive line, etc.
