BOOM BOOM!!! Space Shuttle coming in for a landing

So I am sitting at the computer when "BOOM BOOM!!" I hear the double sonic booms of the shuttle coming in for a landing.

If you have never heard them it is amazing how loud they are. Sitting outside you can feel the booms.

Oh... and the shuttle has already landed. About 3 mins after the double booms. I live in Orlando so they tells you how fast it is flying.

Yup. the are indeed quite loud when re-entering. I believe the last time I heard one was ~12 years ago when staying in Orlando for about a week. Forget which shuttle that was. Actually...I didn't really care so I probably never knew. 😛

Shuttle lands at 200+ miles per hour. It goes from the speed of sound to landing in less than 25 miles too.

I saw one launch in person, a night launch, and it was AMAZING!!! The entire sky lights up and then the sound just blows you away. The ground shakes like an earth quake. Unbelievable.

Makes you wonder where there's never any Sonic Booms in Star Wars, Serenity, etc. You'd think the people on the ground in sci-fi would go bonkers with all the booms from re-entry...

I wish I could have seen a Saturn V go up in person. Those things are still the most powerful machines man has built.

On the 'when we left earth' documentary thing, when they first launched one of those someone had the bad taste to mention at the last minute that if it exploded on the pad it would be equivalent to a light nuclear blast.

I heard it outside, too. At first, I thought it was something serious because I heard the fire trucks and ambulance roaring really loud a few minutes before. Later, I decided to go inside and noticed that the lights were out. So, I thought the booms were probably some substation incident. When I checked the news, it turned out the others heard it too.

I'll be willing to settle on seeing a full size mock-up or an unused one in person. Just to get a sense of scale.
