So buying a book for a class in one's campus's bookstore shouldn't be a difficult task right? You find the section of the store where your class's book is located, find the professor, and pick up book..

I do just that then, pay $120 for this stupid book..go home, take it out of its shrinkwrap to start doing homework for the class, when I suddenly discover that it's the WRONG book.

I check the sticker on the back of the book, and it says "Mathematical stats & data analysis, 2nd edition"..and compare it to the title that's on the book which says "elementary survey sampling, 5th edition".

Worse yet, when I was at the register they told me that since the book is brand new and was shrink-wrapped, that I'm not allowed to return it once it's open. However if they're not total jackasses and realize that they have the wrong book put in the wrong section labelled incorrectly and are selling it so, I would hope they're going to give me my money back..
 
...bunch of bucks for a book..and now the wrong book. Seems like somebody should be able to right that wrong..
 
You didn't look at the book before you opened it? 😕

That does suck though, they better take that back. I'm scared to see what the book I have to get will cost.
 
What will happen is they'll buy it back as a used book for probably $20 or so and you'll have to buy the right book. You're screwed.

I try to avoid the bookstore as much as I can
 
i haven't bought a book from the bookstore for years now. always go a week or 2 early, copy the isbn numbers and the rest is easy.

school bookstores are such rip offs.
 
Dude, unless the shrinkwrap was opaque and you couldn't see the actual title on the book, thereby making you rely on what the sticker said the book was, you're a dumbass. Your bookstore sells books in plain brown wrappers or something? :roll:
 
i know at our bookstore this situation would end with me walking out with $20 from selling the book back, a frown, and a vow never to use my campus bookstore again.

I was a devout Half.com user for the last three years of my college career. The trick is to email your profs BEFORE classes start (1-2 weeks) and ask them what book you'll be using. It actually got easier the last year, because the bookstore put up book lists way before the semester started, so all I had to do was check them and order the books.

If you order once the semester starts, it'll take a lot longer in my experience.

My last semester, I took a microeconomics class as my last elective, my university had a special edition of the book printed. It included a study guide and was otherwise the same as the normal edition. I was forced to buy the book from them, but I kept it in good condition and resold it on half.com for more than I paid from the bookstore 😀.

An advanced chem book that my friends paid $160 for from the bookstore, I bought for $70 from Half.com. Sold it back on half.com for $65. The bookstore was giving people $15 for it because they weren't sure if it was being used again.

this is how i do it. except my book store only puts up enough information so that you know the name of the book. not the edition or anything so you have to email your teachers to get tht isbn. my roomate has a spreadsheet of how much the books cost at the book store and how much he paid on half.com. he saved over 200 during our freshman year. this year he is on pace to save that much agian.

I do the same thing, it works out great.

I resold 3 books from last semester for $70 on Half.com, them bought all the books I need for this semester except one for $68.

These books would have cost me 400+ at the college bookstore.


After spending over $600 at the book store last semester, I vowed to never again shop there unless I had to.
 
I need to start using half.com

I just spend $260 on 3 books. One was used, cost about $50, the other 2 were new (no used ones left). Sucked. Next semester, it's half.com for me.

That's why you always check the ISBN number to match with the tag on the shelf and make sure you have the titles of the books with you handy.
 
Went to the buy back section..showed the girl working there my receipt, she saw it was a new book and said it couldn't be returned, I explained my situation, talked to a manager who knew about the situation..got my book exchanged 🙂
