Bookshelf Speakers

Here are the measurements from Stereophile for the 683's. Looks pretty good. You're looking at the 685's so hopefully the stats aren't too far off.

B&W makes some very fine equipment.

Did you bring your own music to listen too? You want to have a frame of reference for listening to new speakers.

Nah I heard them in best buys magnolia room. That's a good idea though! I'll bring some music next time. None of the critics online seem to have anything bad to say about them...

Yeah B&W is a really popular brand. I listened to some when I bought my KEF speakers. If you auditioned them and liked what you heard I wouldn't be afraid to buy them. You should try and put the bookshelf speakers on stands if you can, they will sound better. I built my own stands for my surround speakers out in my metal shop.

I put a system together not too long ago, this is what I ended up with for my living room.

Front KEF R900
Rear KEF R300
Center KEF R600c
Sub PSA S3000i
Yamaha RX-A2050

Those are not bad. However, before making a decision, I'd give the KEF LS50 a listen. Awesome bang for your buck. The Paradigm S2 are another great option.

A little more than the ones you are looking at, but they are a great bang for your buck.

If I were buying a pair of speakers like that today and were spending $700, I'd be curious at what these sounded like.

But that's not me again.

They are powered, but would work.

Depending on your system they might through things off a bit depending on what you are doing I suppose.

But the rear on them has a full range of options.

just a thought, you would need a adapter for the speaker wires of course.

I've heard great things about those brands. But I recently got a job at Best Buy and their employee discount is pretty good so naturally I'll be choosing something they sell. I'll be entitled to the discount October 1st so I'll be researching until then. So you'll be seeing more posts i the future hehe.

I've learned a lot in these forums and I appreciate all you input!

I prefer more open sound a la Tannoy.

give the Martin Logan Motion line a listen, you might like the sound.

Yea I was looking at those online. I'll definitely check them out. I know in the end it's personal preference. What I'm looking for is , for example, when I'm watching a blu Ray and whether music kicks in or Star Wars-like orchestra deep bass plays, I want to hear a nice piece of that through the bookshelfs. I have a great subwoofer now , SVS PB-1000 , but only have satellites with it. So when I find the right one, i want to see how they will sound with the crossover set to 80. Right now it's at 120 not by choice hehe

get bookshelves with 6.5" woofers

My personal preference is 3 way speakers. There are good 2 ways out there but I like the old school approach better.

Congrats on the job btw. If they do employee indoctrination, pls stop by and tell us all about it. Do one of those AMA threads and PM me about it since I tend to miss a lot here.

I don't think there are many 3 way bookshelves in BB.

Thanks a lot man! You got it

The ones I mentioned are studio monitors and 220W powered and 3 way.

But no, I doubt BB carries those.

That and Tri Amped 8" Kevlar woofers, 5" Kevlar Midrange, 1" Tweeters, and 3 band EQ.

Originally were $500 each.

Enough of that I guess.

I have a pair of Dali Mentor Menuet, and love every minute of music playing through them.

Those look very nice.

I haven't bought speakers in general in a long time myself.

I'd still go with studio equipment myself these days if had the cash.

It's been more than my two cents I guess.

Beats most 2-way monitor`s at twice the cost.Kills ALL- single box consumer stereo speaker`s systems, and still has enough power left to bury them.R.I.P.

3If you're going to buy them, don't buy them on Amazon

... unless the price has come down. Looking at the M-Audio site, it says these cost $349 (per monitor). I'd look at GuitarCenter, Musicians Friend, or AMS. AMS has them for $299 when I just checked. Also the M3-6 might be the way to go if you're doing a home studio, they cost less and the only different i could see from the specs is the wattage and the size of the low freq. driver (8" vs 6").
I have no affiliation with any of the above sites mentioned, I was just surprised to see how pricey they were on Amazon,.. if the price was competitive, like it usually is here, then I'd definitely buy from Amazon.

If I was limited to only what I could choose at best buy it would definitely be the B&W's. That said there's nothing at all wrong with B&W, OP could do a lot worse and he already knows he likes them....
