since i'm having trouble with rh9 and after reading the boards, i think i'm going to use debian. there are hefty load of books on debian, i just want to know which books helped you guys out, so i too can get those books off of half.com or ebay.

edit: after reading some other threads i'm confused now. as to whether i should go with debian or stick with red hat (for a n00b). 😕
 

Download Red Hat Linux Manuals and read then try to install then read some more.

IMHO, RH & Mandrake manpages are the easiest reading for computer text (much easier to read than MS craps speaking from a guy that has to taken NT4/Win2k MCSE). Debian manpages also is excellent, but might find it a little archaic that have some missing section.
 
Stick with Debian.
A good book for the same is Debian GNU/linux Bible by Steve Hunger, Hungry Minds, Inc.

You can buy it on ebay for abt $ 10 or so (thats where I got it from!)
 
The Complete Linux Reference 5th Ed.

Covers SuSe and RH (the RH is 7.3 or so I am told as I have the 4th ed). But I have found it to be an awesome reference. I bought it when I first started on Linux 2 years ago and it helped me to work my way to my RHCE on the first try.

Running Linux 4th ed. Good non-distro specific book which is what you need if your just learning the OS.
 
I have nothing to do with amazon (except maybe loose loads of $$ buying stuff that I dont need 🙂), but just in terms of cost, the same book is prieced lower on their website as compared to O'Reilley's website.

In case you weren't aware ,Linux is an OS for geeks, not dummies ( or so the mainstream media thinks)

Seriously though, these are the Linux books that have saved my ass more than a few times:

-For Beginners-
O' Reilly "Running Linux - 4th Edition"
O' Reilly "Linux In a Nutshell - 3rd Edition"
Sobell's "A Practical Guide To Linux" (an oldie, but a goodie)
"Think UNIX" by Jon Lasser

-For Administrators-
"Linux Administration: A Beginner's Guide - 2nd Edition"
"Linux System Administration: A User's Guide" By Marcel Gagne

-For Power Users-
O' Reilly "UNIX Power Tools - 3rd Edition" ( quite daunting, but very useful...and expensive ) :frown:

Even with these books, don't forget about the Internet or your man-pages. I've probably printed out a good 500 pages of stuff off the Internet that I've found to be just as useful, if not moreso, than my collection of *NIX books.
