Books. How many people still read books ?

Yep, that is something people developing e-readers still do not get.
The physical layout of a book is just handy. The way the brain stores information, a word on a page of a real 2 sided book is easier to find or recall then a single page e-book is.

Sorry but this is nonsense. When I read on my Kindle I am not even aware of the format it is on.

There is nothing about a two-page setup that makes it better for reading than a one-page setup.

they do? oh then might try one. i listened to one and it was 1 guys voice the whole time.
To clarify: Old radio shows did the multiple actors and sound effects. I just think it is kind of cool that people listen to audio books and get a idea of the experience now. Of what it was like to sit in front of the radio and listen to a story unfold, and let your mind do the work the T.V. took over.

Much like how it was in the days of radio, before T.V. Radio productions took it to another level of course, with sound effects and multiple actors.

I switched to audio books following my stroke a couple years ago. Reading is somewhat difficult because I have to reread passages several times, where listening is much more natural/easy for me. I read(listened) to about 30~ titles last year, I would have read perhaps 5 in comparison. Really awesome for someone like me that loves to read, but have a little trouble reading for one reason or another.

Just bought the wife a Kindle Fire and I'll be getting a tablet but I still read books.

I stock up when I go to San Diego. There's a book store there that sells paperbacks for $1 a piece.

its less the physicial aspect and more the fact thay my eyes try to kill me after 10 min of reading on a tablet/e-reader. ive tried them all.

Really ?
Even the ones that are supposed to be made of E-ink ?
Do you have any idea why ? Is it the screen that is to much reflective ?
I noticed myself that i do not have any problems with LCD or IPS screens in general (for short datasheet reading). But i lose the ability to concentrate with reflective screens after reading a minute. I have similar experiences with matte screens reflecting sunlight or artificial light. Books made with glossy paper i despise as well for the same high reflectiveness. It is impossible to do a little bit of concentrating for prolonged periods of time. The interesting thing with paper is that it is has low reflectivity. I wonder if that was the reason why papyrus got so popular in countries with a lot of sun... :hmm:

I am stoked to read you are doing better, brudda. :awe: And that is something I had not considered. So, thanks for raising my awareness.

I like having a physical book to hold, plus I can get them for free from the library.

Last week I did something rare and actually bought a book. I was in a used bookstore and pondering how sad it was that places like that are doomed by the internet and e-readers when I saw a copy of Skipping Towards Gomorrah by Dan Savage for a few bucks. I was looking for some light-hearted entertainment so I picked it up.

Re: Feynman's book, that guy is one of my heroes. He sometimes comes off as a little fully of himself, but then again if I were one of the smartest people in human history I probably would be as well.

Feynman had a great way of presenting. That can be a little intimidating and may seem to be that he was full of himself. But imagine Feynman being very timid addressing a large crowd trying to explain how he sees the subject of interest... It would not work.
I like the video courses with Walter Lewin. To me he also seems to come on strong, but i bet he is a great guy to have around. I do not know if i ever will have the pleasure to meet him though...

I only wish SIRI could read books, LOL. Yea, I've gotten a lot better, pretty much back to normal other than a few things. Even went surfing for the first time a couple weeks ago, outta shape, but loved getting back in the water. Life is good 🙂

Both my husband and I read paper books all the time. We love the feel of books and visit the library at least once a week. We also own a nook and tablets with kindle apps and we read books on those. Books on the tablet LOOK just like real ones. Two page layout. Page turning looks like it does with a paper book. The center is even shaded to look like an open book. Looks like

and I can read them in the dark. The nook requires light but works better in sunlight. Either is better for extended trips than taking several books each with us. We also listen to books on CD when taking car trips.

got my wife a nook and it's like the best gift I've ever gotten her... she's on it while on the train, and while at home when she's supposed to be playing with the kids. 😉

Me... I don't read... ever... I even cheated on high school book reports. I don't have the attention span or concentration to stay awake through multiple pages. I'll read an article from the paper here or there though.

I got some computer books from the library to further my career and I'm just skimming through sections... can't read cover to cover no matter how hard I try. You can probably guess I wasn't a good student.

There's still some visual feedback I get from books that I just don't appreciate in e-readers. In a book I can just flip a few pages to see how far a chapter is. Yes I can do that with an e-reader too, but it's not the same. There's some feeling of accomplishment when you have a massive 1000 page hardback in front of you and you can actually see your progress as you work your way through it. That visual feedback isn't there with a digital book.

There's a kindle, iPad and iPhones in my house. I still choose a good old fashioned book for my reading format.

 Warms my heart man.

As to the library: Me wife and kid go, but I have some weird thing with having a deadline for return, or being fined. So, buying and trading used books is my bag baby.

Yeah, I'm close to having an intervention with my wife re: iPhone reading. I've got a 4 month old and a 4 year old. In the last 2 weeks she's managed to plow through like 5 Harry Potter books. She reads while giving the kid a bottle instead of making eye contact. She reads at dinner instead of talking with us. She spends her entire days off reading instead of doing housework. It's a full on addiction. I mean it's great she likes to read...but uh...hello? Yesterday I was close to chucking that fucking phone into the woods behind the house.

My wife and I periodically talk about getting Kindles or Nooks, but currently ebooks tend to be more expensive than paperbacks. We typically spend $200 - $300 per month on books, mostly used, as we're both voracious readers.

I'm reading Hunger Games since I had to grab a book at the airport for my flight.

It's pretty damn juvenile writing and very easy to read. It keeps me entertained so far though.

if i had to guess it has to do with the lighting, some combo or them being self lit and external lighting

I do not venture in L&R, so I will ask here. Do you often get a sitter and take her on dates? Because it sounds like she is trying hard to escape right now. Hell, she is probably doing everything she can to hold onto her sanity. Now is the time to have a long talk about what would help her get herself out of the mental rut she is in. Send her to a day spa or something maybe?

We have a kindle and my wife loves it. I just can't get into it. Part is the convienence. If we get an ebook from the library its compatable with iPads but not Kindles so I have to convert it. Next is that we share an iPad and a Kindle so if one of us is using one of them we have to deal with converting it to get it on the other.

Sure I could get another one but then there is the cost and its not just the cost of the Kindle. We have about 5 massive used book sales a year in the area where you can get paperbacks for $.50 to $1 and hardcovers for $5 and under. (If you go the last day the prices are typically 50% off those prices)

I also tend to read books with maps/references/biographical pictures in the front/middle/end and I don't find it as convienent to refer to those areas on a ereader when I reach the relevant section of the book

Another part of the old fashioned fuddy dud in me just thinks that it's a poor example to set for kids to be glued to an electronic device instead of picking up a book and reading.

I'd honestly feel less bad about my wife reading a *real* book instead of being glued to her phone reading. It just further emphasises the growing addiction society has to electric devices. It makes me sad to go out to eat and just seeing table fulls of families each with their phones out doing whatever it is they do on a phone instead of talking. The last couple family gatherings I've had were the same way. All of the 20 somethings and below just sat around with their phones in their hands and didn't do anything else.

I got my mom a Kindle and she loves it. I think it looks good and its pretty cool but I still prefer to read text on paper, and the feel of flipping through a book. It just works better for me.

I have an e-reader and a tablet but nothing beats a physical book. The downside is new books cost a bloody fortune in Canada, 15$ is the average now for a paperback in a bookstore (Costco is cheaper thankfully). I usually just wait until Bookcloseouts has a sale and place a large order.
