[Figured this would be a more appropriate place, than the book thread I have in Off Topic.]
I'm looking for recommendations for:
an Active Directory book, like one of the cookbooks? I saw this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Active-Directo...8208756&sr=1-1
or
http://www.amazon.com/Active-Directo...8211572&sr=1-1
But, being they were released before even Server 2008R2, let alone Server 2012 - would I be missing too much with those books? I actually just bought Mastering Windows Server 2008R2, even though at home I am working with Server 2012. One, if I do land a job working with it in the near future, I can all but guarantee the latest I'll see if 2008R2, possibly earlier versions - so knowing the approaches (and having the printed resources) for 2008R2 would be beneficial. Or, what the business has may be based on 2008R2, like Small Business Server 2011 (which can have Exchange Server and a cut-down version of Sharepoint, plus a version of SQL Server, baked in)
I figure: while that book has Active Directory information, it's a complex beast in of itself, a good "here's how to do this and that and this, fix that and this and that" type book would be immensely helpful, both in learning and, most importantly, troubleshooting on the job.
O'reilly does have the newer versions (4th Edition, 5th Edition respectively) of those above books available/coming soon. If you buy the ebook version, it's actually not even a finished book, but you apparently get updates as they add material/edit material, and also get the final version when it goes to press. (all DRM-free - damn straight, as it should be when purchasing full-priced products - though at the moment it may only be offered in pdf version, though typically they have all the main formats - final release I'd expect that).
Problem is - if I buy them now, they are both roughly $45, and again, not exactly Finished Material. They aren't expected until March and May. (AD Cookbook, Active Directory).
Other topics:
Exchange Server
So, Exchange Server 2013 is here. I would expect to work with the 2010 release for the foreseeable future.
Best books for this?
One I bookmarked as a very likely purchase in the near future:
Microsoft Exchange 2010 Powershell Cookbook
at $20 for the ebook, hell - almost a no-brainer, especially considering the rave reviews.
But, I'd be missing a hell of a lot if I went with only that, I reckon. Any other stand-out ones?
At the moment, considering I've never setup an Exchange Server, that alone could probably need addressing. But, aside from that, a good resource describing good planning for building up the exchange services, as well as thorough How To's for most functions and needs, would be ideal. Different books I've come across have been hit and miss in the reviews department.
And: should I just install a trial of Small Business Server 2011 Standard, since the goodies like Exchange and SQL are baked in? I currently have Server 2012 installed, and just downloaded a 6-month trial of Exchange Server that I plan to put up on there once everything else is in order.
