I do the majority of my programming in either Visual C++ or Perl, but a potential employer is writing their scripts in Visual Basic. As a result, I'd like to pick up VB, and was wondering what books people can recommend to learn the language.

I know how to program, I just don't know the language semantics. Can anyone suggest a good reference?

check out barnes and noble, they have a Visual Baic (also visual basic .NET) Step-By-Step. covers the basics of how to get started doing simple programs. might be helpful.

for .net I really enjoyed Visual Basic .NET Complete.

I wouldn't call VB6 a 'beast'. Not sure about .NET, I've never programmed using it, but VB6 is like writing commands in english.
