I got a Nook for my birthday and have been on a free e-book sci-fi binge for the last month.Free books can be had all over the place and seeing you read Pride/Zombies, I take it you got it for free? I always see it on Barnes and Nobles free ebook section. Check out the Baen free library. Guy has about a hundred sci-fi books for free. They may be a bit outdated, but free is almost always good.

Consider Phlebas - epic space novel which deals with humanity in the far future.

The Player of Games is a better (IMO) novel set later in the same universe, and it also delves pretty deep into humanity.

As mentioned earlier, I think, the Stainless Steel Rat books are not exactly sophisticated. Though from what I recall as a young teenager (almost 30 years ago), they were entertaining.

Peter F. Hamilton's Dreaming Void series is very good too.

Just finished Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.
