I am aware that the Explorer uses an LD transmission. That does not mean that if it is properly maintained and not abused it will still have problems. We tow very regularly with ours, have with each of them. As long as you're towing properly, you'll have no problems. It's idiots who two in overdrive that have the problems.Originally posted by: slag
No, he's right. The 1st gen explorer tranny's (a4ld) are notorious for going out. I've had one blow the intermediate band and take the drum with it as well. Trannys in later years are a bit tougher, but they are all LD (light duty) trannys.

We've towed extensively with all three. Never had the slightest indication of any trouble. As I said, all have gone well over 100,000 miles.Originally posted by: slag
No, even those transmissions that were taken well care of eventually grenade. On the 91-92 x's especially, its not a matter of if it will die, but when it will die. 93 and up use better internals but many still have problems.
Its a known problem with A4ld transmission. Don't take my word for it though, do your research and you will see. The 1st gen explorer is NOT a tow vehicle. the transmission just cannot take it. I'm not only speaking from experience (I've owned 4 1st gens), but also from the viewpoint of someone who has rebuilt an A4ld (and beefed it up). There are just too many weak points in the transmission for it to be a reliable tow vehicle. They are a decent design, just not for semi hd work.
