I was on my way home tonight and was almost in Hoboken when a Jersey City Medical center ambulance and police SUV went blazing by. This is odd as ambulances rarely blaze INTO town as we have our own corps (of which I am a member). I cruised by the corps HQ and two out of the three rigs were all out and the chief was jumping into the support vehicle. He told me to get my gear and get the third rig in service as a bomb was found at the train station. I went home and changed and ran back to HQ and was ordered into the spec ops vehicle (a rickety old school bus with a million radios in it) and we blazed down to the train station.
We set-up a command center a block away at the post office and cordoned off the area as the cummuters started piling up. Dogs had detected a bomb on one of the trains (as opposed to the PATH service to NYC) and they were clearing the area. Response was impressive as there were at least 4 ambulances untold police vehicles, motorcycles and horse police patrolling the area. The Coast Guard even had a slew of boats nearby in the Hudson river - just in case. About 20 minutes later they blew the all clear and there was a mad rush of commuters to the station. That was a bit premature as they had only opened the PATH station. 10 minutes later the full all clear was sounded and we broke down our command center and went home.
I am happy that I was there to respond and wonder if it is going to get crazier as the week progresses. Tomorrow night I am on duty, so maybe there will be some excitement! I think Thursday might be crazy when Bush comes to town for his speech...
