I dunno, i have a whole lot of reason to think that americans have it a whole lot tougher, just because of the whole metric-imperial thing.

Actually if you look at the cans of soda...their volumes are 355mL...which is exactly 3/4 of a pint. I find that even in the news in Canada, we will get figures like "the object weighs approximately 91kg"...and it's like, what do you mean approximately 91...that's such an odd number...then you realize it was converted from 200lbs.Originally posted by: Strk

You are correct as most filghts aren't full and short to medium hops are ideal for passenger flights. However, there is a need for large capacity to haul cargos where A380 Airbus is the best at this task, therefore many orders are for pure cargos or 50:50 to 25:75 capacities for parsengers:cargos. Airbus also have on the plan is to have a narrow-body and a widebody that have a capacity of 200-250 passenger that come into service by 2010.
I hope that I?m wrong, but the new 7E7/ 787 isn?t much to brag about, because the cost of owning a Boeing always has been too high for the market. Therefore any gain due to a weight diet may not be enough to negates the lack of capacity and high initial cost. We will have to wait to see the maintaince cost of the new skin, and how well the thing performs in test flights.

Boeing has not received direct subsidies from the US goverment.
Boeing has been losing to airbus due to an aging product line.

Boeing has not received any no bid contracts to my knowledge(feel free to post which contracts they received which were no bid). Heck they recently lost the JSF contract and cant sell a tanker to the goverment without a scandal being involved.
how things are done now I dont know but how things were done in the past then that is how it seems to have been done, both airbus and boeing get loads of cash from governments, just different ways to deliver the money. If you want to bitch about one getting free money then bitch about both.
The differences are quite distinct, airbus is getting direct subsidies, boeing is not. Boeing has had to compete to win the contracts it has received from the goverment. It has won some and it has lost some, but it was paid to produce a product. This is not a subsidy, unless you think goverment should be in the business of making everything it uses(cars, warehouses, computers, printers, office buildings,....)

Here's some information about the contracts awarded to major corporations: linky. Now this does not specifically state that Boeing was awarded sole source contracts during the data period. Based on the overall value of contracts, and the number awarded as sole source, however, concluding that Boeing likely did not receive any such contracts seems dubious. In any case, McDonnell Douglas seems to have been awarded many more contract dollars than Boeing.
I've worked in government, and in contracts (in fact, at the same time) - I understand why many contracts, especially for consultants, are not put out for bid: the evalutation process costs more than ANY potential savings from a lower bidder. Billion dollar construction contracts are not candidates for such an explanation, however.

oh wait, the US govt. doesn't want to do that because of the European counter claim.
besides, Airbus has a convincing point about the the support from the EU. There is a bilateral agreement between the US and the EU that makes this kind of support possible.
