I wonder if the turbine blades handled that hail. Man, it must have been solid chunks of iceballs that they were flying through.

I've seen test videos where they shoot birds into the engines and nothing happens to the engine.

I want to see! Post the vids!

Agreed. Those turbines really can go through Hell and keep on burnin. Impressive to say the least.

I have read that they test for bird ingestion by firing dead chickens into the turbines at a couple hundred miles per hour. they also blast ice sheets into them, and shoot massive amounts of water in for hours on end. it's incredible how strong those blades are.

Feel for the pilot, especially when it smashed the glass Jeez!

There is a reason that radar is installed on those airplanes. I guess the pilots hadn't figured how to turn it on.

Maybe, but they might not have had time. It was only a few minutes into the flight.

if there are holes in the cockpit glass, doesn't that mean that the cockpit would have depressurized and ripped the rest of the glass to pieces?

Or have a just seen too many movies?

I bet the inside of that plane needed a deep cleaning after that!

They probably needed to replace most of the seats!

below 6000' or so the cabin isn't pressurized yet so it probably wasn't an issue. broken cockpit windows will create massive drag though. in a small plane like a cessna a broken front window can make the aircraft nearly unflyable.

I wonder if the blades were spinning fast enough to chop that hail into slush???

Wow, that's amazing. :Q

I've seen pics of planes after being hit by birds. They really get dented up.

The turbines spin at what... 45,000RPM(out of my ass guess)?

That should be enough to chop just about anything up.. lol

I doubt the engine is unharmed though. They probably have to give it a good gothrough after something gets ingested.. especially something like a bird..

LOL!

Mechanic: "John, your engine smells like grilled chicken.."

Pilot: "Yeah... I hit a flock of geese a while back..."
