"They're just as Bad!" isn't any sort of answer, but it's all you've got.

RR, GHWB & GWB all ran up the debt, and GHWB got his balls broken by his own base by having the temerity to raise taxes at all, let alone to Pre-Reagan levels. Funny that- the total debt was only ~$1T when St Ronnie took office, cut taxes, engaged in Militarized Keynesianism, then GHWB just had to have GW1, and his son the invasion of Iraq & more tax cuts. More tax cuts! is the battle cry of Repubs, regardless of circumstances.

Now that we face massive unemployment in the biggest balance sheet Depression since 1929, why, it's obviously time to attack the welfare state, demand austerity when our European cousins are already proving the folly of that-

Kick 'em while they're down!

I am against RR, GWB, GHB but thanks for making assumptions

Austerity isn't working in Europe because they haven't used austerity. We dont have a revenue problem we have a spending problem

Lets raise taxes on the rich and let them all leave, where are you going to get the money to support all the social programs, the people on welfare and other programs will suffer and let them suffer for these idiotic choices they made

Blindly chanting the mantra, I see.

"Expansionary austerity" has failed miserably everywhere it's been instituted-

Go where? They'll pay even higher taxes in nearly all the first world that'll have them, and they sure as Hell want to live in the first world. They'll also continue to pay American taxes as American citizens, not to mention that they can't take their American enterprises & assets with them.

So how long did it take for the president's cronies to write up O'Bammacare?

Go for sequestration right away or let all the bush tax cuts expire.

Congress cared more about getting reelected, so just cut their pay as part of the tax cuts.

They had time to give new home buyers an $8,000 credit for buying a new house and they can slash some of the budget money they are giving to Solar panels, electric cars, wind turbines. We need to spend money on real problems, not prolong the misery of this bad economy. Since congress has proved that they dont care about people they dont deserve to be paid until they solve the budget problem. This is the only job they have and they dont have time to do it.

They get a triple fail.

Austerity is the only solution, why should they pay higher taxes? Because your jealous and angry with them

More mantra, less reason. Unsurprising. Add the usual attributions of jealousy, just to satisfy your need for some sort of imagined moral rectitude.

I try to put myself in the place of the other guy. And when I put myself in the position of having a net worth of hundreds of millions or billions, of being financially unassailable, of having an income north of $1M/month, I have a hard time being sympathetic with the POV that paying income taxes higher than Mitt's 15% is somehow a really big issue from an economic perspective. I'd already have more money than I could possibly spend to support even a very lavish lifestyle.

It only makes sense if it's not really about money, but rather about Power, about having the ability to run other people's lives en masse, on being able to dictate terms that I really have no right to dictate in an egalitarian democracy.

I always thought the cliff was the way for them to pass their policies without taking responsibility for it. They didn't need to put the terms they did into it.

Good point, we get a preview of austerity and it's failings. But your trying to convince the same people who still buy the supply side argument despite its failings.

If you can't see the supply side fail your not going to see the austerity fail.

This is what "austerity" looks like. Oh noes!

austerity.jpg

Agreed. The thing about Europe is they didn't have austerity, they had their own version and called it "austerity" and then when it wouldn't work they can blame austerity as not working

Its the same thing they did to Capitalism in the US, they had a system which was crony Capitalism and then when the system went down they had the nerve to blame it on Capitalism and the idiots in the US think Capitalism is bad

Austerity isn't the problem...it's out-of-control debt that's caused the problem.

Liberals are very good at twisting words to suit their agenda. Reality always takes a back seat when someone starts talking about reasonable spending cuts.

I agree with you since there is way too much spending and the debt is the biggest threat to national security for the US

If they dont want to cut spending then how do they propose we restore the economy?

and where are they going to go? if they hate paying 30% on their taxes, they're really going to love paying up to 70-80% to live in the few countries in this world that can give them the lifestyle they so love.

"we don't have a revenue problem, we have a spending problem?"

Seriously, that's all you got? I've heard about 23 Repub talking heads parrot this line out, ad infinitum, but no one can back it the fuck up. What I do know is that we have had decades of real revenue, prior to GWB, and we weren't in this mess.

where the hell are you pulling this meaningless comment? You have yet to explain it.

Oh, i see the problem. You are stupid. You can't read. Or something is blocking information from getting to your head. there isn't a single democrat anywhere that does not recognize the value of cutting spending and raising taxes. NOT ONE.

that has always been the discussion. only Boner is the one refusing to compromise.

The disagreement is over what to cut, obviously. You guys want to cut into education and social programs. Poor Big Bird :(
