Body Work is expensive! - I hurt my baby w/ pic

Sunday night I was driving back to school when there was an accident in front of me. I couldn't change lanes because there was a car there, so I tried stopping....real hard to do from 75 when the crash is about 100' in front of you. I got down to about 20mph, then had to swerve to miss it...but when I hit the sholder the DEEP (~10") snow pulled me in & put me right into the guard rail.

Picture

The car is still driveable, but pulls hard to the drivers side. Hopefully an alignment will fix it, if not might be $60 for a tie rod, or even $300 for a new lower-A arm.
The headlights still work, but the drivers side won't go down because the fender is in the whole where the headlight goes. The drivers side is up because I pulled the fuse so it didn't burn out the motor.

It's going to be $4500, but insurance will pay for all but $250 of it.
Front Fender = $500
Front Spoiler = $1200
+ some hammering on the nose panel and a small dent in rear quarter (back end slid into guardrail after front hit) and painting of repaired areas.

I'm glad though....with any other car I've owned there was no way I would've avoided hitting a stopped car at about 65mph (you should see the brakes on this car).

Owie. The spoiler's the only thing that seems really outrageous. It's always the labor that gets you on bodywork. Most people just get it done cheaply, but they don't realise that cheap bodywork isn't worth crap. The painting alone is probably $1,500 of that.

Nice move.

umm...yeah...wasn't really my fault there...I say hitting the guard rail is a LOT better than hitting a stopped vehicle (considering I would've sideswiped them right in the rear door...would've been some injuries for sure).

Yeah, I'm considering getting THIS bodykit instead, only $495 and uses the same lights.

You were going 75 on the highway in a Porsche ... in the SNOW?

You are a danger to other people on the road, and you are lucky you are not dead.

The paint job on a Porsche alone is expensive.. Do they still use the epoxy based paint? The type that flakes off (because it's so strong) if your body work is dented.

My dad's owned a 928, 930 Turbo, and a 993 Carrera 4S. All in the Porsche bright red color. Awesome cars. 🙂

You have obviously never driven a Porsche in the snow. The bloody things are better than Volvos in snow.

EDIT: Scootin159, I rather like that fiberglass nosepiece. However the spoiler, rocker panels, and the rear wing are way over the top, major points to you for not wanting them too. 🙂

That's like saying: My car can go at 120mph.

The point is: Just because your car can do something better than other cars, doesn't mean you should go endanger the lives of the other drivers around you.

No, the roads were BONE DRY...seriously...about the only thing on them was a little salt residue.

Ah. I understand. Unfortunately though, this accident WAS your fault. 😱 Your car will be whole again...hopefully your insurance won't drop you like a diseased roadkill rabbit. Insurance companies abhor single-vehicle, driver-at-fault accidents. Good luck.

Yeah, personally I like the rest of the car in it's stock form. The rear bumper isn't exactly 100% like how I would idealy have it (might get the rear bumper from that kit), but it's good enough too keep it. Kinda gives it a little aggressive look.

How slowly do you drive your minivan?

Yup, mine has the same Guards Red that was probably on all 3 of those cars. I like your dad's tastes, although the 928 doesn't quite fit my bill, the 993 is an awesome car, same with the 930 Turbo.

Doesn't need it, just start in 2nd. And traction control doesn't help braking. Seriously though, I'm amazed at how many people think that since it's a Porsche it must be bad in the snow. Porsche's are German for cryin' out loud, have you guys seen German winters? Porsches, unlike Ferrari's or Lamborghinis and other "exotics", are built to be driven daily. If you've never actually driven a Porsche in the snow, you can't possibly evaluate how the car handles bad weather.

True, but if the roads are dry it's a moot point. And better abilities of the car do allow you to go faster than cars with lesser abilities with an equal degree of safety. There's no reason to drive like a doddering old fool at 45 mph on the bloody expressway just because there's snow in the ditches.

The speed limit in FL is 70..no idea what it is where he was. If the road was dry, there's no reason to be crawling along..I have no idea where in CA you are, but have you ever driven in snow?

How slowy do you drive your minivan?
LOL 😀

I'm in luck there though... 4 vehicles & over 30 years with only 1 claim with the same company....rates SHOULD be pretty stable.

I will admit that maybe I should've been going slower, or reacted better, but in reality I know that the only way I could've avoided hitting anything is if I were going about 35 in a 65.

Yes I have driven through snow.
