body piercings and the TSA

so umm what do people do when they have body piercings like their nipples and want to fly? dont fly for 6 months after the piercing? or can one purchase plastic stuff to replace the metal.

Yeah, plastic is generally available, but I also don't think there's enough metal there to cause a big problem.

I've noticed that if I do nothing but take my cell phone out of my pocket the thing never goes off. This is with a belt, loose change, keys, etc. I doubt piercings cause much of a problem.

I travel back and forth from Hawaii to the mainland a lot and the only place that my nipple ring sets off is at the Maui airport. and its just a 12guage hoop.

earrings don't set it off so other similar body jewelry likely won't.

Hidden items such as body piercings may result in your being directed to additional screening for a pat-down inspection. If selected for additional screening, you may ask to remove your body piercing in private as an alternative to the pat-down search.

Non-metalic items up the jacksie would still be detected by visual scans (backscatter X-Ray).

but they wouldn't set off the whistles and bells.

your typical surgical steel jewelry does not set off metal detectors.

Titanium doesn't either. I've got a plate and 7 screws in my wrist and I don't beep when I go through metal detectors.

But they could be whistles and bells themselves!

Some nipple barbells will set it off and result in a pat down. Usually it's same sex doing the pat down too.

I had a friend with a rather large amount of jewelry, They basically wanded her over every time. She was tight on time to make a flight, so she ran to catch hers, and I leisurely took my time saying goodbye to the rest of the people we were with. I looked at my boarding pass and noted that her gate was just about 2 down from mine, so I went to see if I could say goodbye while she boarded. I beat her by a good five minutes.
