Body Fat %

A bodybuilder with 7% may look like that because of all their muscle combined with a low fat %age. But you can also have a very skinny person who just looks anorexic. They won't have the muscle, but they also don't have the fat.

According to that, I have -5.9% body fat.
I think the reading is thrown off by the fact that you're full of sh*t. 😀

Then why don't you try for me. I'm 5'8" and 115.5 lbs.

Ah, when I put in my waist size, I get 7.2% for Estimate 2.
Then you're probably around 7.2%. Sheesh....lighten up. 😛

Stressful day, I just lost a 5 million dollar project...I'll lighten up tomorrow, after I get my ass chewed out. 😀

Estimate #1 based on height and weight
Your "Ponderal Index" is 13.47 which gives an estimated body fat of 4.1% ( 7.7 pounds of fat)

Estimate #2 based on waist size and weight
Estimated body fat of 14.6% (27.3 pounds of fat)

So do I add them together for 18.7%?

I need to hit the treadmill and run more... I wonder how much error is built into that thing....

Tested by what method. There are only a couple of methods that are reliable, and capliers are notorious for not being accurate....just curious.

as far as i know without getting dunk tested your fat percentage can be around 5% off with calipers. they told my friend who is a walking stick he was 16 percent. This guy has his 6 pack shows w/o even exercising he tips the scales at 106. After they told him his percentage i'll never use calipers.

Arent there scales that can tell you that?
Yup. Do a google search for "Tanita".

I have one, works pretty well. It's not absolutely accurate, but it's relatively accurate (ie- you can track fat loss on a weekly basis with reasonable accuracy). They're sensitive to how much stuff you have in your intestines/stomach and how hydrated you are so you have to measure yourself at the same time of day after a trip to the can to get decent results.

arent there scales in gyms that can tell you this?

I have this Tanita, and I'm hovering around 16.5% right now. I was at 19% three weeks ago, and my goal is to be at 10% by the end of August.

Heh, here's my results for 6' tall, 190 lbs and a 31" waist:

Estimate #1 based on height and weight
Your "Ponderal Index" is 12.52 which gives an estimated body fat of 23.1% (44.0 pounds of fat)

Estimate #2 based on waist size and weight
Estimated body fat of 7.7% (14.7 pounds of fat)

It's curious that I'm somewhere inbetween those two numbers at 12-13%

<---- 8% based on 2 different machine measurements 🙂 If they are accurate, then that's me! 🙂 But I don't have bulging abs 😉 but quite a few LARGE vains popout of my forearms hehe

My Ponderal index was over twice the estimate based on waist size and weight.

Anybody want to explain?

I disagree that calipers are inaccurate. They might not be as accurate as other measures, but done by a professional they can be pretty darn close. I myself had my measurements taken by an exercise physiology master's student who had done the procedure on literally hundreds of college-level athletes. They also coincide with other measurements I've had done. As such, I trust them to within a few percentage points of the result that I obtained.

As far as 2-4% being unattainable...apparently Karl Malone has a body fat percentage of 3%. I'd say it might be closer to 5%, but still...he's a professional athelete, and I'd think they'd spare no expense to get accurate measures on him.

And gtsukada: it's very possible for someone that is "skinny" to have a higher than expected body fat percentage. The appearance of six-pack abs are highly gene-based. As such, many chubbier individuals can have better abs than someon with half their body fat % if both put work into it.

As far as your friend, if he doesn't work out then it's very possible that a good portion of his weight is from fat and muscle, as fat weighs less.

Calipers, if handled by a professional, are generally regarded as being somewhere around +/- 2-3% accurate.
