I saw this on the Discovery channel a few years ago. Forensic scientists to help determine how long a person has been dead in different conditions use his research.

Forensic Factor on HDNet last week showed a class learning forensic science. They used pigs and put them in various conditions (water, desert area, hanging, etc.) to show how the number and types of insects in the carcass can help pinpoint the time of death.
 
The body farm is right down the road from me at the University of Tennessee. Haven't been there personally, but some close friends were there during school. They said it was real freaky. You think it's going to be cool and interesting as you get there, but after seeing the first body, you become queasy. From that point, it's just creepy. A unique experience to say the least.
