I figured that's how it would work, too. "and, the next item up for bid is..."ACK!" *clunk!" :(

He's a great host, and PIR is the best. Wonder who will take over...probably some idiot like Ryan Seacrest or Carson Daily.

The show needs to retire with him. Old women only watch TPIR because of Barker.

I've heard that, and also heard he is quite gifted, in the man sense. At 83, it's probably not much use, other than a jump-rope.

Thanks soooo much for that stunning visual right here at bedtime. I am going to have night terrors about BB asking me if I am coming or going, and I will be yelling... I'm coming Bob, I'm coming.

Back in the '70's when I was 8ish I knew the price of Rice-a-roni, Washing Machines, and all sorts of other things that was pointless for me to know because of him. Good luck in your retirement Bob.

GOD IM OLD! I remember watching it when it first aired in the 70's. It failed when they took it to prime time and when they tried to replace him and will fail again when he is gone. He makes the price is right and will go again when he quits and they replace him for the last time.

the show will never be the same, but Bob couldn't go on forever.

I didn't think it would be any good with out Rod Roddey (sp?), but the new guy isn't bad. The show will die when Bob leaves. Who will take over? How could they?

Nah, I think that CBS knows that it's a lot of old people that watch it. It would have to be some host that wants a final job. Maybe Chuck Woolery? Regis Philbin?

Discussion/argument friend of mine and I had about this, if you're bored:

me: looks like bob barker only has 8 months left
friend: are you serious?
me: yep
me: retiring in june
friend: wow
friend: and PIR?
me: they don't have a new host decided yet
friend: i was kind of hoping they'd end it lol
me: lol why would they do that?
it was on before bob barker hosted it
and it's gonna stay popular even when he leaves
friend: because bob became THE host...hoping they'd end it with dignity, it's not gonna be as popular
from a business standpoint of course they won't, but from a fan's standpoint i'd rather see it die with dignity
me: well i wouldn't look at it as now it's GOING to die shamefully one day
if anything, the best thing to do IS to keep the show on, because it's the longest running game show in tv history and who wants to break that record?
who knows, the next host could also last 35 years and become just as regular to the next generation
me: in other words, the show has no end in sight
friend: that's entirely possible i suppose
but i'm not convinced; the new generation might fall in love with it but the current will likely be largely disenchanted with it
me: yeah probably
but hey that's what has to happen......like i said losing one really great host is no reason to kill a show that has possibly unlimited life left in it
friend: i disagree, but i think we're going to have to content ourselves with this disagreement lmao
me: lol well.....just curious......what makes you so sure bob barker is the best host ever? like i said, how do you know the next won't leave an equal legacy?
me: does that mean our generation is the most important? so if we don't like it it should end for all future generations?
me: just supposin some situations here
friend: it's possible that he will be a great host that will leave an equal legacy, but it's not the SAME legacy. i view it much as i do a movie - forgive the personal analogy, but would you want a new actor playing indiana jones in a new trilogy? it's equally possible that he'd mean just as much to a new generation of kids that grow up with him, but it's also fundamentally disrespecting what came before it
friend: just supposin, george
me: lmao...

"but it's also fundamentally disrespecting what came before it"
that is true for the jones example and it would hold true for most other examples as well, and that's because the entity (in that case, the movie) is defined by the original actor (in that case, jones), because he's just that.....the ORIGINAL

what you're forgetting is that bob barker is not the original host for PIR.....as such he does not define that entity the same way jones defines that movie trilogy.....he only defines it in that way in our minds because we've never known another host
friend: nah, i know he wasn't the first. however, any hosts that came before him didn't occupy the job NEARLY long enough to become identified with the show. so, while he may not have been the original host, he is now, for all purposes, the face of the show - and replacing that drastically alters the image of the show

look at who wants to be a millionaire - after regis left, nobody except matt [other friend] cared about it anymore. ditto for that weakest link show

plus, it's unlikely that any replacement host WOULD stick around for so long
me: yeah true.....bob barker gave the show an identity that it didn't have before him
so yeah a new host probably will disgust me equally as it does you, but i guess i'm okay with it because i entirely understand why cbs would leave it on
friend: exactly, you've put into words what i couldn't lol
i mean...yeah, i couldn't FAULT them for wanting to leave it on, it makes sense, but i more than likely wouldn't really watch it
me: oh i bet i will still, what else is on at 11 am lmao
and plus, if cbs didn't leave the show on, where in the WORLD would wilford brimley spew his liberty medical propaganda?
friend: LMFAO
friend: okay, in one fell swoop you've utterly crushed my argument
friend: i now support this
me: wow i invoked a larger, bolded font from you
friend: oh yes
friend: it deserved it
me: now, a similar situation, and for this i'll take your side of the argument
when wilford brimley dies/retires, liberty medical should just close its doors
friend: that won't happen
friend: i have a theory that he's already dead, and they just prop him up
friend: he barely moves in the commercials and never turns his head or anything
me: LMFAO
wow i really bet that's true
some intriciate animatronics going on there

We're not going to see another super-host like Bob because there are too many networks. Shows like TPIR became popular because when it was on, there were only 3 networks. The other two showed 1/2 hour game shows or soap operas. You had a 1-3 chance of watching TPIR. The chances of becoming a household name anymore are severely reduced.

35th seaso for TPIR, 17 emmy's, I remember watching him on "Truth or Consequences" with my Grandma back in the day.

"I thank the television viewers of the country for allowing me to be a guest in their homes for half a century,"

No, thank you Bob!
