At least it's kinda funny and completely harmless. Could have been far, far worse than it turned out.

Oh come on now, the Internet would never be so crass or terrible with something like this.

Never.

Sir Attenborough is famous for wild life documentary. One of his brothers was the Jurassic Park guy.

I'm now saddened and strangely angered that someone, on AT no less, has no idea who David Attenborough is.

I grew up with that old brit.

That would be Richard. ...also a sir, and a famous and accomplished director long before David was generally known.

It looks like the name Boaty McBoatface would be used for one of the ships remotely controlled submarine instead

Well now that doesn't make any goddamn sense. It would have to be Subby McSubface

Attenborough is a god on british TV, an institution, an untouchable.

The Planet Earth mini-series just wasn't right without him narrating it.

"This isn't a nature documentary. It can't be. It doesn't sound right."

From Wikipedia:
Actress and conservationist Sigourney Weaver was brought in to replace David Attenborough as narrator, as it was thought her familiarity to American audiences would attract more viewers.
...Huh.
If I hadn't seen the credits or heard about it otherwise, I don't think I would have recognized her voice.
Attenborough's? I definitely know that one.

The Discovery programmes also used a slightly different script to the British original.
I think they worked in the text "Planet Earth" constantly as an incessant reminder of what we were watching.
