Last year around this time, I sat down and asked myself what the biggest upgrade would be; Video or motherboard? I went with a new motherboard, new ram, new processor over a newer videocard. Primarily because everyone kept saying not to waste money on a 9800pro etc. and that new technology is around the corner. Well, the technology is here... and I'm using an AGP8x motherboard. I'm at this point I've been sitting on an old videocard for a long time, and I have the itch. 2+ years with a GeForce3 Ti200... TIME TO UPGRADE.

Considering AMD really doesn't have any good PCI-e solutions at this point anyway, is it safe to just get a 6600GT AGP8x?(not to mention no real performance diff at this point) Monitarily that is what sits best with me. An xp2500+ barton overclocked seems to be doing its job just fine for me right now. I just don't want to be stuck buying a new videocard again in a year when I decide to upgrade my motherboard/processor/ram. suggestions?
 
A 9800 pro may be all you need. Prices have dropped to less than $200, close to $150 at a few venders.
 
either go for a small upgrade (like the one above) or go all out (pci-e board, proc, ram, and card) cause agp kind of looks like it's on it's way out, so do you really wanna sink $400 - $500 into a dieing technology. I'd go with o1die's sugestion and save the extra cash for a bad-a upgrade next year. problem with only upgrading cpu/board OR vid once a year is that one is always behind the other, so you don't get the full benifiet from the newer one. Catch 22
 
A better deal right now would be a vanilla 6800 for maybe $10 to $20 more than that. The 6800's closeness in price to the 6600 GT AGP at the moment is why it's not getting recommended yet as much as was anticipated.

The 6800OC are 256-bit instead of the 128-bit from the 6600GTOC right?
I'm going with the BFG cards just because I really like the security of a lifetime warranty, and 24/7 tech support from people who speak real english.(if it were german tech support, that'd be fine too!) I also hear they run pretty well, with minimal problems. Opinnions?
 
xfx is pretty much nVidia's premier card maker at the moment. because of that, a lot of times they throw in extras you won't find elsewhere. example: xfx 6600gt ram clock speed - 1000mhz / all others (that I know of) - 900mhz (this is only true of the agp, as all pci-e 6600gt's have the 1000mhz ram) However I am not too familiar with the 6800's so I don't know. (wow, looking back, that was a lot of words just to end with "I don't know" 😀 )
