Board Ghosts

Well I have a really wierd problem. My PC turns on if I touch ANY metal area on the Case....:Q

I have no idea what it could be. I've checked to make sure it's not because metal is touching the board....but ironically, metal HAS to touch the board from the base. The case has built in raised bases for the motherboard to be secured. Not sure what to do now. I'm scared my board will short out because the last board I had miraculous froze and never turned back on again - and I'm having a feeling that whatever's behind this causes that.

Please help.

Any comments, questions, suggestions would be gratly appreciated. I own the 'toolless' evercase.

Thanks Again.

I would make sure that the board is not bowed and touching, and just because the standoffs are metal, it does not mean the board is supposed to touch it. There should be a small metal circle around each standoff, but if one is off center, instand short to ground.

Try running the board outside of the case with only the power supply attached to the case. If that works normally, re install the board and use all the standoffs. Try and use washers on the top of the board (paper/ plastic / organic) between the mounting screws and the board, and then run it again.

Thanks....I think I'll try washers.

If that doesn't work....it's back here for me!

I wonder if that killed my last install? The thing just went down...in the middle of windows and boom....it wouldnt turn back on.

sounds like you do not have a good earth/ground circuit ( check the wall outlet , all metal must be earthed if you can touch it ,computers are not double insulated and therfore must be connected to a grounded socket )

the static on your body is triggering the boot

I just went through this while assembling a new machine but in my case it would start spontaneously and the mouse was very erratic. Anytime I would pick up the MouseSystems optical mouse the cursor would head for the left side of the screen. A few seconds to minutes after shutdown the machine it would restart by itself. The trouble was a bad power supply with crap riding on the +5Volt bus. the power supply was a new PP-352X Antec.

Ok guys.

Well the washer thing was useless because:

1. The raised base holders seem to be coated already
2. In any case, the MSIs underside for the screws are protected (no metal)

It seems to work fine now...I completely removed the board and all the parts and put it back in and now it doesnt seem to be having any problems whatsoever. Oh yeah...I think I had put the power jumper on wrong. Whats with those things? Some of em install with the words on the jumping facing you, and some with it away from you?

My Power Supply isn't supplying readings as it's supposed to though. Man, if it's not one thing it's another huh? It's an antec 300w smartpower PS.
