Board games

The classics? Risk and monopoly for sure.

The best boardgaming experience of my life was an unbelievable Risk game that went on over three days.

LOL, this is exactly why the "classics" SUCK. No group whose members have real lives has this kind of time to devote to a single game play. The design of most classic American games is absolutely awful, though there are some exceptions.

We also played some epic games of Diplomacy; you need a good crowd (and a good host) for that. The guy who set up those games did it right: We all got a manilla envelope with supplies when we arrived, he set up tables and chairs around the board like a UN conference, and had designated meeting areas. Plus refreshments, of course.
Ah, the Friendmaker!

I own multiple copies of Diplomacy. Everybody can have their own gameboard if it makes it easier for working things out in private meetings. My game cards are laminated for easy writing. Orders are written on the back of their gamecard. Game is great with 7, good with 6, decent with 5, horrible with 4 or less.

The only other military boardgame I play is the 50th anniversary Axis and Allies. Every other A&A is poo in comparison to this one.

Anybody want to trade some board games? I have a mint condition played only once Arkham Horror that I want to trade cause my wife doesn't like it. I even have a brand new sealed board for it. I also have Eaten by Zombies and Heroes of Graxia.

I'm interested in thunderstone dragonspire, the dominion expansions or Quarriors.

I used to love Battletech but never could find anyone to play with/against. Yeah, I tried some of the online versions but it's just not the same.

Saying Imperial is like Risk + Monopoly is kind of an insult to Imperial. Imperial is a well-designed game with no luck. The players are entirely in control of who wins, and the rondel is brilliant.

My favorite "board game" (actually a card game) is Race for the Galaxy. It's tough to learn, but once you get into it the depth of strategy is awesome. It's a quick game, and it rewards skilled play.

I wasn't aware we had gencon vets here. the reason I call Imperial Riskopoly is that its easy for people who haven't played it to grasp the basic idea that said yeah I do enjoy the rondel and the many many winning tactics you can implement

The only thing that killed those games was cable TV.

so...I see your argument as "you guys are losers because you watch less TV"

Most of the friends we have over regularly are women. All of them, plus my wife, plus several men I know, all really enjoy dominion. I like to think that it has wide appeal because it the gameplay kind of resembles shopping every turn but still getting to keep your money once you finish shopping.

lol, probably. I do find that it definitely needs more than 2 people, though. the strategy becomes way too easy. after the first couple of turns with 2 players, the path is more or less set.

we've played it quite a bit, so have become comfortable in our ways.

we have some friends that do game night every once in a while. Dominion was the first one that really turned us on--and actually bought our own game (first time in, at least...20 years, haha).

I like Settlers, too, and Carcassone. Both are great.

Never was a board game family (father particularly dislikes them) so I never got into them. I guess Monopoly for obvious reasons.

same boat. when i was in 4th grade my friends dad was HUGE into it. tons of minnies. i got hooked in. then they moved away. 🙁

ended up getting some (ok, lots of) stuff as a teenager, but never had anyone to play with. still have it all sitting around collecting dust.

I need new games for my group of friends to play...

I'm thinking PowerGrid, BSG, Agricola/Puerto Rico, Pandemic, or The Great Space Race but I'm open to anything. Any suggestions?

Big fan of Battlestar Galactica here. Settlers of Catan + expansions, Thunderstone + expansions (dominon type card game with a dungeon crawler theme.)

I did GenCon for two years. The first was strictly for Star Wars Minis 2k tourney (which one of our team won). We played a few board games, but the tourney really dominated that year. The next year we played all sort of board games. The payouts for the take-ins were horrible, one of our team won the PowerGrid event (which you had to pay for mind you) and won a $20 game... We now do the WBC since it is more local and after you pay for the days all the events are free (and free open gaming unlike GenCon). I did a bunch of racing games this past year, probably going to do train games this next year.

Agricola should not be bunched with Puerto Rico, Agricola requires MUCH more thanking than the other. I have not played BSG but I have heard great things about it, I know nothing about Great Space Race.

I'm down in Champaign-Urbana area. I'm sure there's a boardgames club on campus but I have no knowledge of one. I did join the local pinball league though. :awe:

Ack, too far; I could direct you to some board-game peeps in the B/N area, about 1 hr west.

And U of I has a decent Judo club there - well had, as I was last there over a decade ago and haven't been in a while - but I digress . . ..

Many people I know love Settlers, it is one of my most hated games (along with Twilight Imperium... damn dice!!!).

If you like Thunderstone, you might be interested in Ascension. Actually, anyone who likes deck building games, Ascension is a good one to try out.

My favorite board game: Solarquest. It's more elaborate and less linear version of Monopoly in the solar system.

Others:
Monopoly
Life
Risk
Chess - casual only, I don't memorize move tactics
Trivial Pursuit - it's fun as long as the version doesn't have ridiculous questions...like in Genus IV "Who was the silver medal winner for men's singles tennis in the 1988 Olympics?" Who freakin' cares?

I never got into RPG board games...the one time I tried to take a crack at D&D, most of the time got burned just trying to make a character. Could've had more to do with who I was playing it with.
