Board Games You Love

Monopoly, Clue, and Risk are staples in our house, but we're looking to branch out a bit. Just grabbed I'm the Boss from Amazon, so interested to see how that plays out.

Our games of Monopoly are pretty NHB: any rules can be attached to a deal as long as all players in the deal agree (and yes, we allow 3-way deals). Deals involving a child are subject to approval by an adult who's not part of the deal. We play with a stash of dough in Free Parking (built through the various taxation vehicles in the game) and $400 if you land on Go.

What board games do you and your family/friends like to play?

But that game can take way too many hours.

The only drawback is the game is best played with 4-6 people, no more or less.

Somewhat related. What are your favorite board games in ipad app format? Carcassone? Ticket to ride? Anything else?

Euro-style board games are the best. I have a hard time going back to Monopoly and Clue after playing these.

Settlers of Catan - Awesome game, sort of halfway between Risk and A&A in terms of strategy and complexity.

Settlers of Catan: Seafarers - Fun expansion, setup can take a while though and I've gotten a bit sick of playing it because it takes so long.

Dominion - I only have the base game but my brother's girlfriend has a few expansions and they're really fun. They change the game A LOT.

Ticket to Ride - A bit simplistic for my tastes, but fun nonetheless. Supports 2-5 players which is good and it's easy for new players to understand.

7 Wonders - My brother owns this one. Lots of fun. Supports 2-7 players.

Alhambra - Brother's girlfriend's game. Somewhat similar to Ticket to Ride when you boil it down. Lots of planning ahead required.

There are alot of good family games, but many depend on how "serious" you get about board games.
Settlers of Catan: good introduction to more "hardcore", often german, board games. I played the crap out of this way back when, but rarely these days, I dislike dice. Fun family game.
Bridges of Shangri la: Very chill and easy to learn board game, but reasonable amounts of strategy for those interested.
Carcassonne: Tile laying game. Easy to pick up, all you do is match patterns. It's pretty fun for how simple it is.
Dominion: Deck building game. Fun for people that may enjoy building decks in pokemon, yugioh, or magic.

Many of the other games in this thread are fantastic games, but may be a bit difficult and confusing for younger kids. Many also often taken freakin forever (Axis and Allies take hours just to set up). If you are willing to give more complex games a try, I recommend Power Grid, the aforementioned Axis and Allies, Shadows over Camelot, and Small World.

Growing up, we enjoyed Monopoly, Life, Sorry, Risk, Axis & Allies, Scrabble, and Battleship. Later on, we got into Settlers of Catan: Cities & Knights and Blokus. It's more of a card game, but lately we've gotten into Bang.
