BMW's ///M vs Mercedes' AMG; 4 - 0

NFS4

No Lifer
Haha, just got done glancing over Motor Trend's April '02 issue. They've got:

M5 vs E55
M Roadster vs SLK32
M3 Convertible vs CLK55 Convertible
X5 4.6is vs ML55

Not surprisingly, BMW swept the competition😀

sweet. my neighbor just got a new red m3. it's beautiful. saw a black convertable m3 on the road today also =\ i wish i had one.

Nice to see BMW doing well...though I wouldn't cry if forced to own any of those 8 🙂

Shouldn't they be comparing the ///M BMWs to the AMG Mercedes?? It seems fair that the performance variants of BMW should be against the performance variants of Mercedes.

Ummmm, all of the cars tested of BMW were ///M.
All of the Mercedes cars were AMG.

E55 AMG
SLK32 AMG
CLK55 AMG
ML55 AMG

I don't think that Motor Trend is that dumb to test unequal cars😉 Besides, anytime you see "55" on a Mercedes, you should KNOW that it's AMG

I bet one of the major factors considered was the fact that MB doesn't offer any stickshifts for those models. I know that the SLK is available in a manual though, is it true for the SLK32? The only stickshift Benz that I drove was the C240 that I test drove last summer. That was weak.

News reports indicate that after blowing their whole testing budget for one issue, the rest of the year of Motor Trend will suck ass.

driven ALOT of those cars, let me tell you that BMW freakin OWNS the competition when it comes to sport(y) cars, simply because the mercedes variants are automatic!~ it just doesn't feel right! when on the mercedes, (probably due to the automatic), when i floor it, there's liek a .5 -1 second "lag" time before i actually feel any oomph, although there is quite alot of it when it gets moving ^_^

the bmw is also (imho) alot more comfy to be in and looks alot better

The problem is that MB is trying to compete on BMW's home turf, which is sportiness.
I don't know how many people buy MB for sportiness. I think most buy them for the uncompromising luxury and presense. I want my MB to look like a Tiger tank, not these sissy wannabe cars they are making now.

Next year the E55(or is it later this year?) is getting a new engine, but the M5 will still top it..

Lol...

My general impression about BMW and Mercedes has been that BMW makes "driver's cars" while Mercedes makes "passenger's cars...." Am I wrong?

Yes, this is the news I am use to hearing in regards to BMW. But will it last? Will the next ///M car be Bangled (read M6)? Will the next ///M car have SMG and a column-mounted gear shift? Will the traditional 6-speed manual between the driver and passenger be replaced by iDrive? Will the dash of the next ///M car tilt towards the driver? These are important aspects of BMWs that allow them to win so many awards, but from the looks of it, BMW is no longer confident in producing "the ultimate drivers' car." Instead, they are building a computer on wheels! Will BMW's future remain as bright?

The E55 is in general a better track car than the M5, at almost all of the track days I have been to E55s really take it to M5s. And this is not really due to driver skill either. In my opinion the E55 is a nicer car, but I would not go so far as to say one is better than the other only that one might prefer on to the other. But, then again the E55 is the faster car.

That lag you are talking about is probaly due to the A. The pedal being bottom hinged B. To acually floor a mercedes you have to press the pedal past what feels like the floor, its a very stiff "clicking" type feeling that most cars dont have. Trips up alot of folk.
