don't the BMWs come with free service now?

It used to be free oil change for life. Now it's like 5 years and something like 40,000 (?) miles, whichever comes first.

so you're saying someone who bought an older model a few years ago get to go in for life while new customers who bought this year can only get it up to 2012? well that sucks.

<--- thinking about X5. nice upgrade from Xterra 🙂

Hyundais are crap. My roommate has owned 2 of them (97 Tiburon & 2001 Santa Fe). Both had nonstop problems which is why they offer a 100K mile warranty. He vows to never give them the benefit of the doubt again. Horrible cars.

Not sure what my comment had to do with what you just said 😕

Anyway, from what I have experienced and from what I have read, Hyundai's are a lot better now than they were back in the late 90's - I think from around 2003 on they've seen a lot of improvements across most/all of their models.

Doesn't BMW recommend really long oil change intervals, like 16k miles or something in that range? 40k miles would only get you two oil changes!

Synthetic oil can probably last that long, however I'd be really concerned about the oil filter.

I love this car! After researching for a year and having to deal with an unreliable BMW this car is terrific. The quality of build is great, handles well in the mountains, ice, snow, and rain. On rougher roads it is quite noisy in the cabin but quiets on smoother surfaces, could use some insulating material to dampen the noise. I opted for the all weather mats and cargo tray which are very helpful having a dirt/gravel driveway, they are very easy to clean. The heater works well, have yet to fully try the A/C in hot weather. Great versatility in seat designs, went to the store and brought home 2 boxed shelf units and 2 adirondack chairs with a few bags and groceries also!
Favorite Features
Versatility, sticks to the road well during questionable conditions, handling.
Suggested Improvements
Insulating the cab better for soundproofing on rough roads and engine noise. The engine noise isn't bad but compared to my BMW, which I know it isn't, it is quite noisy accelerating.

This is not uncommon in Europe. The American practice of frequent oil changes has more to do with the fact that Americans rarely, if ever, check the oil level than it does with improving engine longevity (well, except for the fact that never checking the oil could potentially be very bad for your engine's longevity as it's typical for most engines to consume a quart every few thousand miles or so).

What year and model BMW? For all I know it could be a 80's 318 so of course even a Hyundai could be better.

The late 80's-early 90's 3 series are my favorite BMW's ever made. So don't hate. 😉

I like Hyndai's. Drove a couple of sonatas and santa fe's as demos a while back.

Also all the BMW drivers I see around here never get close to pushing their car and use it as a luxury car...not exactly what the "ultimate driving machine" was made for.

i had a 1999 BMW 540 - screaming fast.. the sound system was absolutely terrible. the system in my wife's ford explorer was far superior.

You know, the reason a company offers such a long warranty is because they believe it is reliable, not to lose money fixing those nonstop problems. 😉

Dave

I ordered a new head unit for mine as soon as we drove it home from the lot 😀

In the newer BMWs, there isn't even a means for you to check the oil. The recommendation is to have it changed every 16k miles or so.

I test drove a Fit and the seats absolutely sucked. They were rock hard and as flat and a pancake and didn't hold you in place at all.

Maybe Hyundai marketing wrote that review? Hmmn.

no sh!t.
i don't like Hyundai marketing, they should market to their own demographic. comparing themselves to Lexus and BMW in TV commercials is downright disgusting.

i don't have anything against them as a car company or their cars, but they should compare themselves to Honda and Nissans and Toyotas. don't go a class above.

I don't see Honda comparing themselves to Lamborghini.

They are marketing to their demographic. The younger up and comers that can't yet afford a BMW or Mercedes or Lexus.

After owning a BMW that was expensive to upkeep, buying this car was great. I love the gas mileage and it is fun to drive. The sound system rocks!

I don't doubt that the Elantra is a great car.

With no further information, I will guess that he is a 20-something male who spent half his income on that BMW's loan payments and insurance. Thus, the Elantra is the better car for him right now.

Or simply had a 20 year old BMW.
