for some reason the plate looks like it says "EMO8395" to me. Maybe it's EMD8395

Plate is EMD8395,
He was Daniel Portela from NY age 29
It was a 2011 M3 - A beautiful 2 door coupe. I've seen photos of it.
He left the players club at 3:30am, but was he drinking? Maybe he had a coke?
- He was at a very high rate of speed
- He was at the far left side entering into the curve.
This is the real issue to debate; why was he so far out of line entering the curve? Sadly, he either really failed to know there was a curve there or he was intoxicated and was too slow to react to the curve.
He was sideways judging by the skid marks before he hit the median and the tree. Either way, it appears he was doing near or above 100mph in a 45 at 3:30am after leaving a bar. I drove by the scene today and it's clear he was either hammerd or was sober and driving way beyond the limits of the car/his abilities/ or that corner. If you're sober you would not be sideways on the outside of the corner like the skid marks show.
I'm glad nobody was walking their dog or out jogging. It's a residential area.

Christ you're only like the third person to post that...IN THIS THREAD. Re-Re-post fail for you.

and sudden accelleration is equally likely to do so.

Many survive the initial impact anyway. It's the post impact issues of not having immediate medical attention that is the real cause that most end up not surviving.

Sadly that fact acts as a springboard in many lawsuits vs the city/state.

Not really. A lot of Wellington has some pretty nice turns in it. Even better was 20 years ago.

I knew a lot of people mostly not personally but 2 were good friends that lost control on Berkdale.

South Shore is now a bit different in lay out, but that road used to be a fun drive late at night.

The real interesting thing in this is there is another man being charged in DUI manslaughter that left the Player's Club as well and had an early morning accident. He's the heir to the Goodman A/C fortune.

Owning a car <> knowing how to drive it.

M3 drivers along with the Vette crowd always fall into this mentality.

Not that it really matters, but he crashed his new 2011, and had previously owned a 2008. Knowing this you would think he should know how to handle the car and where it's limits were, especially when on the street, but drink clouds judgement and he's become just another statistic.

Ahhh...that Jalopnik post was confusing when I first saw it.

ughhh i'm gonna have to concur although It was in my friend's M5 when we spun out because he was being a db. the back end got loose and he held his opposite lock too long and we spun out in the other direction. we spun around and landed in the grass median. the cops never cited my friend although they probably should have. they probably felt sorry for him since he just wrecked a brand new 100k car...

last time I ever go in a vehicle with him driving.

what is it with these guys needing to show off?

Driving like an asshat with a passenger shows a real lack of responsibility. Most will panic when they even get close to 6/10 in a performance car. A lot of major accidents are caused when the passenger grabs the wheel out of fear.

Solo, it goes with the realm of fast cars. Fortunately many the want to break laws off the track stick to non-prime time and off-shoot areas. I did a lot of fast driving as a "kid" in the boonies of Wellington actually where this happened. Outside of there Royal Palm had some industrial areas that were wide-open at night.

Northlake blvd was a good top speed run back in the day way out west.

First time I did one I didn't realize how quick I covered major distance. At the end of the line the pavement ends. I scrubbed off about 30mph and got down to around 100-120, but still miraculousy didn't go in to the canal that runs along side that 2 lane road once I was bajaing.

It took forever to stop on compacted dirt.

Remember those kids that drove their dad's M5 on John Travolta's airfield in Florida? They were going so fast their headlights couldn't project far enough for them to see they were heading into a ditch. They were going over 100MPH when they hit it.

A friend of mine cracked his 2004ish Beetle in half on a tree while drunk recently. He survived although it's a mystery how. He hit the tree mid-roll with the undercarriage first and split the car just behind the drivers seat from bottom to top. The accident investigators estimate he was going around 45mph when he impacted the tree but were unable to determine rate of travel at the time he left the roadway. The impact crushed several vertebrae, completely destroyed one of his knees requiring complete reconstruction over several months and a host of other complications. He was in a medically induced coma for about a week after the accident while they tried to decide which parts to attempt to put back together first. They found bone fragments from his shattered knee as far away as the bottom of his foot and near his spleen.

It's been about 8 months now and he's still mostly in a wheelchair although he's rehabbing his knee and should be able to recover limited mobility within the next 2-3 years. They had to fuse several vertebrae in his neck and back so his range of motion with his neck/head/torso will remain severely limited. He's in ridiculous amounts of pain constantly and will likely require high doses of pain relievers the rest of his life. I'm not sure I'd say he's lucky to have survived given the pain and misery he will be in the rest of his life but I can definitely say he's lucky he didn't kill or injure anyone else because that would be a much heavier burden to live with in my opinion.

I just can't understand how anyone can drive after drinking these days.
