I've never understood the appeal of BMW myself, and after the last few atrocities looking like they were designed by art college dropouts, I don't plan to investigate the issue any further. It will take a lot of apology from Beemer after the X3 and Z4 to get me to take a 2nd look. I have never driven any, so I can't comment on that aspect but I sure do dislike their looks. I guess in that respect... it doesn't really matter how they drive. I'd never be caught dead in one so drivability is the least of my worries.

BTW the preceeding opinion has been brought to you by a die-hard MB / Aston fan and should be taken with a grain of salt (or two)

Me too. I just bought an Acura TSX, and I can't see why anyone would go with a BMW over an Acura TL or RL.... at least in that price range. Someone tell me what a BMW 3-series has over an Acura TL? They're pretty agile, have similar power profiles, the TL has ALMOST every option the 3-series has (I think it's missing retractible sun shades or something, that's it). But, you can get it for like $5k - $10k less. For me, I didn't need the power as much as I did the gas mileage (TSX is a 4-cylinder with 200hp), AND I got to save money. Easy choice.

Plus, more importantly, I feel that Acuras/Hondas are more reliable than BMWs are.

EDIT: Just to make sure I'm clear, I'm not talking about cars like the 6-series. That car is sex on the road. I would give my testicles for that car, and I'm not kidding. Hot hot hot hot.

BMW's have rear-wheel drive, something Japanese car makers haven't figured out yet. (I know there are a few rear-wheel drived cars, but when you have as much power as the BMW puts out , it's way too much for the front wheels to handle)

My wife and I just purchased a Lexus IS. We could have bought a BMW but honestly I'm fed up with their reliability issues and expensive repair costs. I also think the Lexus looks 10 times better than the new 3 series.

Right on... and that's exactly why the only Japanese cars I've ever owned, have been an assortment of Miatas.

that is some serious rice

Do your research, that looks like a stock SE version with a 1 or 1.5" drop and Kazera wheels. Last time I checked rice is nto just some wheels and a drop and i am strict about what rice is(for example any sort of body kit or spoiler that is 3" above the decklid)

WHY do you have to mess with crap to make it good? just MAKE it good in the first place. make it have all the power all the time. make the seats right in the first place so you don't have to spend a decade getting comfortable. make buttons for the radio instead of a computer menu. etc. etc. etc.

i believe you just said whatever clarkson said a long time ago. well, not everybody want their car to be tuned to get the fastest lap times all the time, hence the 400 mode probably makes the car more comfortable, smoother gear changes, uses less gas etc.

the 2001 m5s are fugly. The camry isnt the best looking car but its a model compared to the fat ugly chick m5. 2004 M5s are nice but 2001? please.

Whats the fuss about BMW? How about we look at some other things:

What's the fuss about plasma screens? There is SOOOO much better stuff out there than plasma but people still buy them, because they are the fasionable thing to have right now and the word 'plasma' sounds cool. You can't be the envy of your peers now with a 180" 1080p front projection system now... it doesn't sound as 733t or expensive as 'plazma' even though the former is much more expensive, bigger, better in every way, and more exclusive than something any joe shmoe can walk into best buy with a paycheck and pick up. Its funny how people say they do things to be custom and unique when they do the same thing everyone else does (custom 'rides' all look the same, etc)

Why do people have RAZR phone fetish? Cmon the phone sucks, there are much better phones out there that have better screens, external memory cards, bigger batteries, etc. And they practically GIVE them away (my ugly but FAR better featured VX8100 cost more) so its not like its a money related status thing. But the RAZR is the phone that everyone thinks is cool? Why? You're guess is as good as mine.

Status symbols. Herd mentality. Need I say more?

I think at some point BMW stood for something that was a cut above the rest, but now that everyone with a minimum wage job can lease a 3 series its kinda diluted the name IMO. Same thing with the Lexus IS and the Mercedes C class (wtf the plastic interior looks like a civic, not a mercedes)... Once you go down market... You know how many brand new BMWs I've seen in the carports of trailer parks?

I'm 100% content with my '03 Cobra Terminator, its the car I wanted, and the one I bought. I'd get an '07 if it didnt weigh 4,100 lbs and have weaker internals. It's funny how many college kids driving their parents 318i act like they have a $150,000 car because it says BMW on it and have this "BUT BUT BUT I HAVE A BMW!!!! WTF!" look on their face after I hand them their ass in my "pos ford"

Personally the only BMW I would ever care for is a M5 or a Z8, maybe the newer 6 and 7 series.

Any particular reasons BMW owners park their shiny new cars OUTSIDE the garage instead of inside? This is an honest question as it seems like it's to show off to anyone that drives by; I see this with Infinity, Lexus, and Mercedes too. It's like all the crappy cars are in garages and the people with new expensive cars keep them outside even if their garage is empty. I would figure it should be the other way around...

Personally I keep it under lock and key and not out where some prick can key it or egg it, esp with a real BMW like an M (I think that's an M anyway :p)

Except for the fact that there's no such thing as a 2004 M5.

Eh-hem....

The 252 kW (343 bhp) 3.2-litre high-performance power unit featured in the BMW M3 has alone received this coveted award for the fifth time in succession - an unprecedented record.

Some people ride in cars, while others drive them. Obviously you do not have a passion for cars, thus a camry or accord will suit you just fine.

German cars are usually more fun to driver, but their reliability is super lacking and that's why I think they are POS cars.

That would be a 'M series' (M3, M5, etc) not a '3 series' (318, 32x, etc) or what I call a 'real BMW'

My point is that most of the attitude stems from little kids flaunting their parents '95 318i like it's a $100,000 car because it says BMW on it.

Maybe thats valid in this case since it is featured in a photo, but is it in the garage now or is it always parked in plain view? You would assume that if it was just pulled out for a photo the garage door could still be open but.... Anyhow I'm talking in general, the nicer the car, the more likely it's to be left outside in plain view (so everyone can see it). I see this all the time no matter what neighborhood I'm driving through.

I would think if you have a nice car you would be more likely to keep it secure and protected from vandals and the elements.... but thats just me.

Really? Then why does it have a 3 on the back of it? That's like saying the Touring version isn't a 3 series, it's a 'Touring series'.

By that logic you're saying my '03 Cobra Terminator is the same as a $8,000 sub 190 HP rustang.

M3 >>> 318 + 325 + 330

M != 3 series because Mx = M series

M is higher breed of car, not a different trim level (like your 'Touring series' example would be)

I have owned two Audi's, a 1993 90CS and a 2001 A4 2.8(1.8 is for wannabe's).
I am contemplating trying out a BMW with my next purchase, which wont be for a few years. Audi make nice cars but I think their engines leave something to be desired. You hit that 100K mark and you can replace the car payment with engine maintenance.

My problem is I think BMW 3 series looks weak which will force me into the 5 series, a car I might add I do find very attractive, however that price tag is not!

I know fairly well what an M car is. It's a factory modified 3 series, ergo, it IS a 3 series.

Yes, both your car and the base model are the same car, that's why they have the same name. You have a Mustang Cobra. Terminator is just a codename.
