What's the "got ya" on the 535i?

This car captures nearly everything I really desire having in a sedam, I6, RWD (with AWD option) 6spd manual option, staged turbo you know the rest....some reviewers compared it to a 550i but without the V8.....

Some neat deals here and there have come to my attention, have spotted a couple of 2008 535i sub 5K miles for $40K that's over $ 11K below MSRP, I know these things depreciate fast, but Jeebus, $ 11K before the 5K mark? Is there a catch here?

 
I'd be willing to bet there's more than 11k margin in a 535i so that depreciation isn't surprising. Good job letting some other shmoe pay it 🙂
 
Well, the depreciation of 3 series is supposed to be the lowest among all the Bimmers, and yet, I was able to get mine @ $ 28.5k ($ 10k below MSRP). It had 7k miles and was 11 months old at that time. It's basically 26% depreciation for 7k miles and 11 months.

Keeping that in mind, I would expect that specific 535i to be cheaper than $ 40k being considered a good deal, actually, as 5 series depreciates faster than 3 series in general. It's just how the luxury cars over $ 30k works, I guess.
 
expensive cars are expensive to maintain, so they depreciate fast. check out the depreciation on an S-Class for a real shock.

Ya, but that's a 7-series equivalent car, it's top of the line of course it's no shock if it depreciates like a rock. But the 5-series is supposed to be more in common, $11k of depreciation after 5K is eye opening.

Better than the Lincoln LS. Saw a couple of 5-7k mile 2006 cars that were loaded (elite package, park assist, rear heated seats, side curtain airbags) going for ~$20k - MSRP was close to $50K.

S class, 7 series and the A8 all depreciate like rocks (55-58%) after 2 years 36K miles if my memory serves me right. Fantastic value for the DIY crowd.
 
keep in mind the difference between MSRP and invoice is a little over 4K (at least on a 3) and its really easy to buy the car for invoice + 1K.

Then depending on the time of year you can either get trunk money or free options, for a while 5 was coming with free ZPP, 3 was coming with free tiptronic. Only suckers pay anything over 1K invoice on a BMW, read up on bimmerfest.com (ask a dealer forum).

even better you could do European delivery and save some more cash.

I knew aboujt European Delivery, have always wanted to do that. But good point about the invoice business, I will need to look into that.
 
The catch is it's a BMW.

My father just bought a 535xi. I drove it around a couple weeks ago.

It's very nice and comfortable; but then again, it's a BMW 5 series, so I'm not sure if that says anything.

Lot's of read fail here. Did you notice the year on this car? 2006? That means the car is basically four years old, regardless of the mileage. Not really an Apples to Oranges comparison...
