BMW 325I

I think it's an awesome car, but if cost is an object there are a lot of competitors that offer more for less. My next car will probably be a 3-series.

Where? The 3 series have insanely high resale - I would be very surprised to see a "barely used" 325i for less than the high 20s.

No fvcking way man. 330 or don't get a BMW. Try a 3.0 Quattro, G35, or a similar car. BMW is great but the 325 is kind of blah. That being said you could get a 1.8t and get an APR chip and upgraded injectors and your car would be going great.

AFAIK a barebones one STARTS at the high 20's. The thing with the 325i is that if it wasn't a bmw it would sell for $5k+ less. You're paying a lot for the badge. If that's important to the buyer, and they don't mind the fact that a HUGE number of cars can kick their ass for much less money, then it may make sense.

They are expensive and not very roomy. If it's mainly just you in the car then you will be fine. If you have a family this isn't the car for you. Don't buy an automatic if you do get one.

Minor stuff goes wrong with them and they are expensive to repair.

Also, don't skimp on the maintenance if you do get one. Make sure you follow the factory recommended service intervals.

On the plus side they do seem to hold their value much better than other makes, especially compared to American cars.

You will not find a barely used 3 series for $20k unless it is a stripped down economy model.

wow why r u so anti BMW?

nissan fanboyism showing?? 😛

They do indeed start at the high 20s, but they are SO stripped at that price that nearly every 325i costs considerably more out the door. A year-old 325i will always cost high 20s.

By barely used, I meant used with under 50K miles. I should have been more clear.

Nice link. I like the part about the V6. It's nice to know you are buying a car from someone who clearly knows nothing about the car.

considering the G35 is arguably a better drive, and most people probably couldn't tell a bmw from TL driving it, and both whip the beemer's butt in value.

Well, I like the M3 and M5, and I'm sure the 330 is a nice car too, and I like the 7 series, etc. etc. I just think that the 325i is the poor man's BMW. It's for the guy who doesn't care that he just paid a crap load of money for an underpowered car, because it's a BMW, and that's all that matters to him. As mentioned by others here, they are VERY expensive for what you get. It just strikes me that if you're not looking to spend more than the 325i price range, there are several other cars quite significantly superior to it, such as the G35, Acura TL, A4.

that wasn't your point to begin with. your original point involved a barely used car.

You could, but now you've just dropped $18-22k on a car that is about ready to leave warranty, and your reward is that you get to pay BMW service fees on anything that goes wrong. Plus, it's still slow 🙂

This is more likely what you are going to find a used 325i for. Cheapest I found from a reputable dealer in my area with warranty.
Holy CRAP. Drop a few K and you've got yourself a brand new G35 instead. Hmm, which one to pick...

There are a lot better deals out there for $34k. It would a lot more sense to pick up a 98 or 99 M3 and use the money you save for an engine rebuild and some performance goodies, if you really want a BMW.

I tend to disagree with Skoorb that the 325i has nothing to recommend it. It is actually a reasonably quick car with the legendary BMW handling, shifter, etc. I recently drove a buddy's 1995 325i and it was a revelation - I was flatly amazed by the driving experience, and this was a car he spent $10.7K on. It was a hell of a lot nicer to drive than my 2001 Maxima SE, a car I like quite a bit.

The 318i, not sold in the US, is definitely a watered-down BMW, but to me the 325i, with its creamy inline 6, offers a real BMW driving experience. You do pay a premium, and so on paper it is a poorer value than the TL or G35, but to me it is not a terrible value.

No kidding. I think that one had almost 50k miles on it too!!!

I'd much rather have a G35 for the money. I've never been all that impressed by the Acura TL though. Or the Audi for that matter (they are also overpriced for what you get-IMO).
