I finally got a Bluray drive for my PC. I didn't realize it at that time that playback is not trivial. I just assumed it was like a DVD. I realize now I should have paid the extra ~$30 to get the drive bundled with software. :\

I have the latest version of MPC-HC and it opens a BR movie without error but it simply does not play. My understanding was I should be able to play it if everything is HDCP-complaint. Is this true?

If not, then do the options come down to buying something like Powerlink to play directly, or AnyDVD to remove protection and use any player to play it? Unfortunately both of those are a lot more expensive than I thought they would be.

Thanks.

You should be able to stream (internally) to your media player of choice via MakeMKV. Preferably though, just rip them then play. Far, far easier as the streaming method is quite sketchy, especially with menus.

Honestly, unless you plan to rip, Blu Ray on the desktop is seriously not worthwhile. DRMd to deatb is an understatement.

I read about DVDfab in other posts but it had the same 21-day trial as AnyDVD. I didn't realize there was that free "passkey" version. I guess I can try that first to see if it plays the movie I have.

Yah, had I realized this before, I probably wouldn't have bought the BR drive, LOL.

Thanks.

Blu-ray is a storage technology, and Blu-ray movies are movies, usually in some high-definition format, stored on Blu-ray disks. Your computer is treating the optical technology like it should, a storage technology, but your operating system is missing an import piece of software to play movies stored on the storage technology.

I grabbed my BD drive on sale so I could rip my blu-ray anime set, and I could just play from the rips and keep the BDs in a fireproof safe.

I've toyed with the idea of getting a BD, more for data storage than movies, but realistically, the only thing I would need such large capacity on a single disc for would be music files (I don't watch all that many movies, from any source.) Since most of what I have (and almost everything I really care about) I personally ripped from CDs I own, I haven't so far felt an overwhelming urge to back up the MP3s, even though it would make sense now that you can get Blu Ray drives for relatively little money. For everything except media files, DVDs still work fine for me - those files just aren't that big.
