Hope it's not Vaporware.

The surprise entry in Microsoft's and Intel's list of failures is disc storage capacity. On paper, Blu-ray appears to have the advantage. But the two companies looked beneath the paper: Capacity, said Ribas, "used to be the biggest advantage of Blu-ray, and we believed it. We thought, they'll get 50 GByte BD-ROM discs working, but it's not happening, and it's nowhere in sight. There are not even pilots. It's only in the lab that they are building these discs." With regard to demonstrated capacity, he told us, HD DVD-ROM actually leads BD-ROM by a score of 30 GByte to 25 GByte.

I'm not surprised. They were shooting kinda high with it anyways, and with all of the other garbage they've announced with the players being "unhackable" and reporting any changes to their code/firmware, BluRay is never going to happen.

I wonder if Sony's PS3, being billed as "a thousand times more powerful than any current PC", is overhyped too.

The Cell processor is a nice idea, but it'll be poorly implemented. Obviously the games are going to be amazing no matter what, but it won't be any more powerful than the Xbox360.

Just Microsoft propaganda to try and stop Blu-Ray hype. With the HD-DVD supporters sitting on their hands and Toshiba delaying release to next year, they have to do whatever they can to spread FUD about Blu-Ray. With no lead time, HD-DVD has no chance of catching on.

Maybe 1000 x a 386SX processor from 1992? :p

they were actually better off using a P4 or A64 instead of a multicore CPU or CPU+SPE's

HD-DVD is the way to go... it's only got one DRM technology (AACS) to defeat instead of three on Blu-Ray (AACS, ROM-Mark, BD+). BD+ is probably the most nefarious - it actually rewrites your player's firmware if it detects any mods having been made to the player.

Now excuse me while I adjust my tinfoil hat and wait for the DMCA thugs to show up...

Interesting read. Doesn't mater to me, I just wish they'd make up their minds and pick one instead of going to market with both like the stupid +/- crap we have now.

Losing it's appeal in what respect? Dual layered Blu-ray discs might not be out at launch, but all players will support DL ROMs and they will be out eventually. For the first year the battle becomes 25GB single layered against 30GB DL. I would be willing to put up with a 5GB deficiency until DL discs hit the market.

I hope you aren't counting on triple layered HD DVD discs coming out any time soon.

My morning paper reported that Microsoft and Intel have announced support for HD-DVD.

I just want them to pick one and be done with it as well.

OH, and to put it into the XBOX360, that would be nice.

that sentence would have made more sense like this:

More like the chip is 1000X the size of the dick of sony's ceo.

Agreed, regardless which one gains marketshare, I'd much rather buy one and be done with it...

Support for hybrid discs that can be read in both current DVDs and future players, was the second critical element. This would "future-proof" new releases, enabling consumers to buy DVDs that can play in today's players, while also providing high-def content for tomorrow's.

This is critical for Xbox360. This will allow MS to release future games on these hybrid discs if/when HD-DVD players are added to Xbox360. Then Japanese(mainly) developers can include the full 720p/1080p prerendered video for users of Xbox360v.2 and a smaller 480p version of those videos for Xbox360v.1 that can only recognize 9GB of the disc.
