Don't you think that's a bit premature? How much was a CD burner when it was first introduced? A DVD burner? The first LCD monitor? Yes, price is very high, but it will drop rapidly, plus if Sony really does incorporate it into the PS3, it will be given a huge shot in the arm.

Well that is amazing since the PS3 is going to be using Blu Ray. Hmmm, doesn't sound DOA to me.

And dude, when have prices NOT fallen in tech hardware? DVD burners were $15,000 when they first came out. Let me guess, you pronouced them DOA too, right? ;)

Not to threadjack, but what are your thoughts on Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD?

It seems to me they are gonna be repeating the VHS vs. Betamax with Blu-Ray & HD-DVD...

Maybe i am way off; what do you guys think?

My theory is that HD-DVD will be cheaper and have plenty of space for 80% of the public so it will do very well.

I figure $250 for the burner and $20 for the media.

CD burners were this expensive when they came out.

Heck, I have a magazine from 1987 with a $2000 CD reader in it.

Remember the Blue Ray is not compatible with the current DVD's and the HD-DVD spec is. That will make a difference. Also Microsoft has official support for the HD Media Player coding for HD-DVD. Who do you think will win?

so then the real question is: Sony vs. Microsoft

Maybe it'll be like DVD-R and DVD+R.. readers will read both, writers will write to both... the only decision I have to make is whether to buy the blue ray disc or the hd-dvd disc

maybe

There is going to be DL bluray coming out very soon, too. 46GB on one disc is going to be hella impressive.

how much space is it on a HD-DVD then? DVD is a well known standard so BlueRay is gonna have a helluva time to compete with just the name.

Blu-Ray will win this format war because:

-It currently has the most industry support, including Dell and HP.

-It has the most capacity, and TDK has already shown working prototypes of quad-layer, 100 GB discs.

-It will now have at least one advanced codec in its final ROM specifications to match HD-DVD.

You guys have to remember that the drive mentioned in the topic of this post is a RECORDER. Sony's PS3 will ship with a read-only drive. So the cost of this recorder has no bearing on the cost of PS3.

So it's very much alive then. Coming on to the market, with almost no demand, with $45 media looks good to me. Should be down to $10 or less by the time we need it.

Beta
Atrac/MD
Blu-Ray
Are we seeing a pattern?
The question is simple: will Sony open it and let others use it? If the answer is yes, it will win. Previously, Sony has had better technical formats, but managed them too greedily.
