Bluetooth tethering

Why is bluetooth tethering not stable on my phone and tablet? I seem to lose conection after a while. Wifi tethering seems fine but it drains battery life so fast.

If you tether to Wi-Fi and connect the phone to a laptop USB port it will keep up the battery. If I am not near the laptop, I connect the phone to its charger and keep the battery charge up. I do the same for hot spotting the phone.

I vaguely remember reading about Bluetooth and how it periodically surveys connected devices so that it can preserve power when it is not being used. I think that is true even to WiFi tethering on some devices.

If it disconnects in the middle of active use then the I would first suspect of the hardware but it can be software as well.
