-I think it would honestly be simpler to insulate government and media from billionaires than somehow try to siphon off all billionaire money.

That's the root of the problem after all.

If a billionaire wants to fuck off and go run a pet project on his private island (no kid diddling or most dangerous game shit allowed) then let them have at it where it doesn't affect the rest of us.

Tell me how you think any government or society in history has ever handled corruption and influence by the wealthy and powerful and I’ll believe you that it’s easier to keep moneyed interests out of government.

I was agreeing with you. Everyone knows there is a finite amount of money available, so if one person has more others must have less. Or (and this is a crazy idea) quit sniveling about the success of others and work on your own.

You most certainly weren’t agreeing with me and you missed the point entirely. Success isn’t the issue, it’s unchecked power and influence that is the problem.

For existing wealth the only thing that would likely stand up to legal scrutiny is to effectively island the wealth in such a way that when accessed for personal use in any way income taxes are levied at high rates above some set point.

A lot of very wealthy people borrow against their portfolios and this is not treated as income thus not taxable. It should be a priority of tax policy writers to close that loophole.

"Buy, Borrow, Die" Strategy. Taxing that borrowed money as taxable income that is really the only way to do something. However from a practical stand-point you are not going to be able tax billionaires out of existence.

Progressively higher taxes like we always did before Reagan and the party of incompetent government instituted their economic policies that led to the current situation which was a repeat of what happened in the early 1900’s where understood the ramifications of then ultra wealthy dictating policy? That’s just a guess though.

Fiddling with income tax rates isn't really going to get you there because of the "Buy, Borrow, Die" strategy. You need to figure out a way that when someone tries to leverage unrealized capital gains they generate a taxable event.

We can certainly try. We shouldn't give up because something seems difficult to implement.

That shouldn't be too hard. Use unrealized capital gains to borrow money? That's now a taxable event. Have unrealized gains over some amount? Now you owe some percentage of tax as a form of property tax. Die and pass on your stuff to your kids? Have a high estate and/or inheritance tax, close off a lot of the BS trust loopholes, and get rid of stepped-up basis.

That’s still called taxes.

That seems hard to do from a policy point of view let alone from a political point of view? Borrow to buy a house - you are taxed. Borrow to expand your production line - you are taxed.

Borrow to buy a house less than $2M? No tax. Borrow to grow your business or invest in a business? No tax. We already have ways of figuring these things out it's not really that hard.

More high-quality input from someone who's never had a thought deeper than a puddle.
Taylor Swift is a billionaire how would you reduce her net worth?
Why is Taylor Swift your go-to example here?

Well, there's this...

Still no mass exodus, but the screws are tightening. People are fucking morons. Same bullshit, different sticker. There's a lot more control when you hold the tools.

Turns out people care little for shitposting.

Also, pretty hilarious that the shitposters in charge of social media for the US government are so mad they aren't getting the negative engagement they want on Twitter, so they come crawling to BlueSky to almost immediately be mass-blocked.

It's attention seeking behavior. They are out of juice and have to resort to increasingly desperate and chud behavior. Unfortunately for them the nuclear block on Bsky is quite powerful.

People know they have no juice. In response to yesterday's protests, did a bunch of MAGA chuds come out? No. All they can do is shitpost.

that's such a great feature
It really isn't, like Twitter the person doing the blocking still has their posts visible to the one they are blocking, and some of these US Gov accounts have stated they are using BSky to find people to go after. Basically BSky offers no real protection.

Huh?

The nuclear block on Bluesky prevents the blockee from seeing any content the blocker posts. Seems like it works as intended, whereas on Twitter, the blockee can still take screenshots easily and sick their followers on someone.
