People didn’t join bluesky because of excessive moderation. They joined it because of insufficient moderation.Yea, but you can do something about it on mastodon. Turns out bluesky's federation isn't all it was billed as.
That's the point. With real federation you can join an instance that aligns with your views, or just do it yourself. Corporate bullshit is always corporate bullshit. Only the sticker on the package differs.People didn’t join bluesky because of excessive moderation. They joined it because of insufficient moderation.
The reason most social media sites moderate is because their users like it. The reason twitter stopped moderating is because it was no longer intended to be a business but a far right propaganda resource.
Most people don’t care and are largely fine with moderation on Twitter before and bluesky now. Very few people want to bother doing what you describe and that’s why mastodon will never go anywhere significant. That's the point. Edit:
If people were largely fine with it, I wouldn't be seeing a bunch of black and trans people running from bluesky in my tiny world of mastodon.
Dunno. I doubt it's a mass exodus. Just another turn of the thumbscrews on the way to twitter3.0, and then all the surprised Pikachu faces when everyone figures out that yet again got duped.I don't see a mass exodus here.
Is this one of those #walkaway fake trends??

People liked Twitter just fine and are fine if BlueSky just replicates that but goes back to banning Nazis.Bluesky's own stats API is showing they've been in decline since early this year. Their total number of accounts grows (at a declining rate) but active users are dropping.
I can't say whether or not mastodon is benefitting from this trend. There are metrics but they are opt in and vast portions of the network do not opt in to any form of tracking. What I can say is that the timeline on the instance I run is flooded with introductions over the past week, and the faith people had in Bluesky being actually federated in any meaningful way has been shattered by Bluesky silencing a well known black voice and it suspending them on Blacksky as well, something that should not have been possible.
Bluesky is a scam, it's always been a scam. That is not me trying to boost Mastodon. Masto may or may not work for you and I don't view you any differently regardless of how you feel about it. But the idea that venture capital was ever going to build a well run social media space was always a pipe dream, and always will be. Their goal is to make money, the more the better, and well run social spaces do not make nearly as much money as badly run ones do.
If ATProto has anything actually useful to add to the social landscape we'll find out when someone forks it and builds something truly independent based on it. My money would be on Blacksky to pull it off if anyone can.
Twitter's nickname for the past decade, long before Elon, was "the hellsite" so I'm not so certain people liked it just fine so much as tolerated it due to a lack of alternatives. Time will tell though as there are alternatives and they are aggressively improving on the many things Twitter never did.People liked Twitter just fine and are fine if BlueSky just replicates that but goes back to banning Nazis.
I think what you guys want out of a social network is just not what most other people do.
And yet there it was, doing just fine. I personally don't care one way or the other, I just know I've seen years of 'mastadon is the future!' that never happened because people didn't like the experience.Twitter's nickname for the past decade, long before Elon, was "the hellsite" so I'm not so certain people liked it just fine so much as tolerated it due to a lack of alternatives. Pretty sure I addressed this when I said "due to a lack of alternatives"....And yet there it was, doing just fine. I personally don't care one way or the other, I just know I've seen years of 'mastadon is the future!' that never happened because people didn't like the experience.
Yes, totally agreed. Big part of why I like the ActivityPub model where it's far easier to build a community. Bonfire is a project I'm watching very closely, it's based on ActivityPub and mastodon compatible, but it focuses on building communities first and wider network connections second. I like a lot of what they are doing: https://bonfirenetworks.org/I just don't get the attraction of reading fairly shallow talking points by people who I don't know!
It's just lots of people shouting into the void as far as I can see!
Likewise tiktok, reels, etc

There is no shortage of alternatives, just like there weren’t a shortage while Twitter was around. They just don’t catch on.Pretty sure I addressed this when I said "due to a lack of alternatives"....
You seem to mistake me for an advocate for Mastodon. I'm not, I like it conceptually, I run an instance, and in general I agree with the concept that corporate social media will always be undermined by the need to maximize profit which is a problem mastodon does not have. But ActivityPub is a promising technology, its use is growing (mastodon is only one project, there are dozens), and I support community building that is run by the community. If someone manages to actually make ATProto a reasonable option for federated applications that does not require some central infrastructure, more power to them and I can't wait to see what is done with that! I do not really care about the tech stack, I care about healthy communities.
100% this.People didn’t join bluesky because of excessive moderation. They joined it because of insufficient moderation.

I mostly posted nature photos I took and music stuff when I was still using it, saw some cute animal videos, stuff like that.I just don't get the attraction of reading fairly shallow talking points by people who I don't know!

Honestly just seems like you have some weird axe to grind. I don't have a horse in the race aside from "social networks should be controlled by people not corporations or governments" and I truly do not care what the tech stack is so long as it enables that. I doubt most people do either. Not sure why you keep repeating this line about people using AP applications being weirdos rather than people getting needs met that are not by corporate social. There is no shortage of alternatives, just like there weren’t a shortage while Twitter was around. They just don’t catch on.
I sincerely hope you guys are able to make something that does what you need, that sounds great! I just think most people don’t value that the same way.
It's social media done rightIRC isn't really the same thing though.
Nah, forums will always rule supreme. It's social media done right
