bluescreen problem

so i have had a blue screen problem for a very long time. this happens often when im closing multiple tabs of my web browser or when i alt tab in a fullscreen game. sometimes this seems to happen out of nowhere too. any ideas as to what it can be caused by?

i would provide my minidump files but i have no idea where to upload it or how to attach.

edit : reading my minidumps with bluescreenview seems to indicate a problem with ntoskrnl.exe and win32k.sys. and include "SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION" and 'PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA" but i dont know what to do from there

What OS are you using? Service Pack installed?

Installing Windows 7 Service Pack 1
1. Visit the PC manufacturer's website and update ALL drivers. DO NOT use Windows Update or the "Update drivers" function of Device Manager.
2. Check Device Manager for any unknown/disabled devices - if there are unknown/disabled devices, fix them with the latest drivers from the device manufacturer's website (not the PC Manufacturer)
3. Visit Windows Update and get all updates (may take repeated visits)
4. Visit Windows Update and get Service Pack 1 (usually under Important Updates).

i'm not running any antivirus software.

For your benefit (and ours), go ahead and run Malwarebytes Antimalware, updated, full scan.

Let us know what the results are. If it doesn't find anything major, we can stop there with the malware scans. If it does, you may want to get an Antivirus and run that as well.

That way we can start with the assumption you have a clean system and go from there.

I've just updated Windows and made sure all of my drivers were up to date. Device manager shows no unknown/disabled devices.

I ran a full scan of Malwarebytes this morning and it didn't find anything. I still have the problem.

OK, good. This particular error has two main causes:
1. Less common is a background application (usually antivirus, but that of course has already been ruled out).
2. A bad spot in RAM. You could run memtest and see if it finds the error. You could also run one stick at a time (which is what I would suggest) and see if you can duplicate the problem.

Are there any other background applications that could possibly cause this problem?

How long should I run memtest for? I suspected it was the ram around the time it first started happening and I ran memtest for about an hour.

Could be. You could run MSCONFIG and post a list.

Depends on who you ask, lol. Some find it on the first run, some after several hours. Which is why I suggest that one stick at a time method.

Here are my startup and services tabs from msconfig. I chose to hide all microsoft services because I didn't think that could be a problem (correct me if I'm wrong).

Would it be a lot faster and convenient to pinpoint the issue if I uploaded my minidump files?

Make sure skype and Nvidia drivers are up to date. That's the only thing I can think of from the list. Did WhoCrashed give you anything more specific? That and the errors you listed in the first post would be the only things I would be interested in.

On the Nvidia drivers - download the latest for your card from the website, do a manual install, and don't install the features you don't need (3D, extra service, etc).

If nothing there helps, sounds like RAM. How often is this occurring now?

Doesn't really provide much information besides "SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION" and "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA" & probably caused by " ntoskrnl.exe" and "win32k.sys". I'll install the latest drivers for nvidia and make sure skype is up to date and see if the problem still persists. Thanks!

Okay so I installed newest nvidia drivers and skype and ran memtest for 2 passes (should i try for more?). Could this problem be caused by a faulty ssd?
