I want a bluray player for movies but all my friends tell me to buy a ps3. What should I do? Is the ps3 bluray player top notch or is it cheap?

It seems good but if it is, wouldn't everyone just own a ps3? Why do other brands even go into the business of making bluray players?

It's a very capable player and yes, one of the best. It has one of the best processors at its core. The downsides aren't in the quality...but rather...the usability. You have to have a device that uses more power than a standard player at idle, needs an adapter to be controlled via IR, and can't bitstream HD formats(currently).

However, these issues are fairly minor. With being able to get a PS3 right now for effectively $199(including GC and credit card signup) the choice is pretty simple.

The first advertisement originally said sonystyle.com only. It was later determined that it comes off ANY purchase of $299 or greater. So you don't even have to purchase a PS3 to get the $100 off. You also aren't tied down to the sonystyle store. You can read up more on this at slickdeals and fatwallet.

The Sony BDP-S550 is coming out a little later this year, and is a better choice than the PS3 for a pure BR-D player (if you don't care at all about games or media streaming). The Panasonic DMP-BD50 is also a good bet.

That said, there's really nothing wrong with the PS3 as a BR-D player, as long as you can live without IR support (or are willing to pay the $20-$60 to purchase an IR adapter of some sort).

I see! So anything? Well it's no surprise walmart.com is sold out, so I just present the ad to my best buy and hope someone will do a match for me?

It's their policy that they are matching this deal. It shouldn't have anything to do with luck. They should know to match it.

I also was reading over the $100 off terms it says:

Your first single sales receipt purchase made at a SonyStyle store, including SonyStyle.com equal or greater than $299 ("Qualifying Purchase") will automatically qualify you for a $100 Statement Credit. Statement Credit will be posted to your Sony Card Statement within 8-12 weeks from Qualifying Purchase. Offer available to new Sony Card accounts only and only one $100 Statement Credit may be earned per Sony Card account. In some instances an application may require additional processing, in which case Instant Credit will be unavailable. When you are approved for the Sony Card, you will receive your account and CVV2 number on-screen. Please make sure to make note of your account and CVV2 number as this information will not be available until you receive your card in the mail. If you are approved, you will be able to make a one-time purchase at SonyStyle.com only, with up to a maximum line of credit of $5,000. Additional purchases with this account cannot be made until your card is received in the mail. This promotional offer is available for new Sony Card account holders only; existing Sony Card account holders or accounts are not eligible.

are you sure it will work for me?

: Hi, my name is Daniel C. How may I help you?

adf asdf: hello

adf asdf: I read online that people were getting the rebate for any purchases even at
bestbuy, etc, could that possibly be true?

adf asdf: multiple users confirmed it
: This is for people that applied for the Sony Visa specifically for the PS3 promotion. This is no longer offered however.

adf asdf: what is offered now and when was that ps3 promotion over?
: That offer ended last week. The offer now is exactly as you stated $100 a purchase of $299 or more. But since it pertains to a dollar amount, the discount only appears on your statement if you purchase through sony directly

adf asdf: and what was the promotion for last week, just so I know what I missed out on?
: It was $100 the purchase of a Playstation 3.
: It is more or less the same offer, but the stipulation was that it had to be a PS3 specifically. Now, it can be a product over $299, so that includes the PS3.

adf asdf: but it also had to be from sonystyle.com or sonystyle stores?
: No, this could have been purchased from any of our Authorized dealers that you listed. But this promotion has ended. Now you must purchase from Sonystyle.com or a Sony Style store in order to be eligible for the promotion.

adf asdf: ah I see!
adf asdf: thanks!

so turns out, it had to be for a ps3 only???

I doubt it, read up on the slickdeals.net site for more info on this promotion. People have been purchasing ANYTHING over $299 from ANY store for weeks now and getting the credit. So what they told you can't be true.

Is Sonystyle still doing the $100 credit on sign up? I don't see it.

Very nice man. I think I might just pick up another PS3 at that price. :)

wait so people who qualify now can still get the credit off a ps3 from best buy or walmart? Even though it says in bold to be used in sonystyle stores/.com?

what's the deal with that?

Again, read the slickdeals thread. It has always specified either a eligible merchant or sonystyle. However, they take the discount off no matter what you buy or where you buy it from.

Seriously, you sound like every SD n00b...just read the thread. Most have been successful with non-Sony store retailers other than a few exceptions.

And the worst thing in the world is to look like a "noob". It is important that you look like someone who spends hours a day here, with thousands of posts, because that is "cool".

;)

Well duh! :p I said that because I looked into the deal myself a few weeks ago and it didn't take too long to see that you were indeed able to buy at non-Sony stores. Can't just put your hand out and expect to have everything given to you. Well, I guess you can, but you shouldn't ;)

I'm still undecided on a PS3 myself...I need a BR player (and I'm a gamer), but all these rumors of announcements at E3 (a month away) have me waiting. I just moved, so saving that $400/300 cost for a few weeks is probably a good idea anyway.

alright, I just talked with the chase visa guy and of course he says, it must be done on sonystyle.com. I did the walmart deal for a friend using my card and so far no credit.

He says lots of people were complaining that they didn't get a credit using places like amazon and he told them to return it and buy it from sonystyle.com

maybe they're cracking down on the credits?

when does the promo end for me if I have to purchase again from sonystyle.com?
