Hit up Pandora, throw in some old familiars and be ready for a lot of new stuff you haven't heard of

I recognize the skill involved, but I think bluegrass sounds dull and repetitive. The vocals are usually nasal and somehow annoying in the same way that a small engine revved to to a high-pitch whine is annoying. There's lots going on, but rarely is there any change in dynamics, so that it sounds like a fast-paced mish-mash of repeated riffs at exactly the same volume throughout. It tries for a joyful, light-hearted, happy sound, but I find monotonous music to be depressing no matter what it's going for. I find most bluegrass very distracting and it actually hurts my head to listen to it for any period of time.

Edit: I'll admit that Allison Krauss and Union Station is far and away the best bluegrass I've heard, but I've also heard a lot of bluegrass besides that. Most of it is crap.

I love country, and hate bluegrass. Well.... perhaps hate isn't strong enough. I can usually tolerate hearing music that I don't prefer, and even downright dislike... but I'll definitely avoid any kind of event that includes bluegrass music. Nonononono. Bad.

Oh, and apple butter FTW. Pumpkin butter FTW.

I grew up around Bluegrass music and don't like it much at all. Country (some) is OK, but generally don't like Bluegrass music.

Oh no you don't, mister. You left off the most important part of the post:

*That* is why the terrorists will never win.

bela fleck and the flecktones are a bluegrass/jazz/fusion band that i love. great talent in the band. their sax/brass guy took over with DMB when their guy died recently, their banjo player is tremendous, and victor wooten is the god of the bass guitar.

"Newgrass" is pretty good too. Nickel Creek, Old Crow Medicine Show (although they're more olde-timey Americana than Bluegrass), Railroad Earth, Trampled by Turtles, Yonder Mountain String Band (although they're more of a jam band now), Infamous Stringdusters, Hot Buttered Rum, all great stuff!

oh how could i forget YMSB? theyre what got me into bluegrass to start with. i didnt care for them much and saw them live with Keller Williams and Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, two of my favorite artists, and i really enjoyed their performance.

they have a nice, upbeat way of playing some bluegrass that made it easy for me to enjoy. after that, as time went by, i began to enjoy more and more of it. ive got something by hot buttered rum, i think, but i havent heard it in forever so i dont remember it

Doc Watson is a shit ton better than Krauss. I like Krauss and all, but it starts sounding all vanilla real quick. She ain't got the soul that the old timer's have (had).

Krauss is kinda bluegrass light, in the sense that she's a crossover artist.
